Full Job Description Position Overview:
Counselors and Social Workers report to the Executive Director of Inclusion and serve as members of the Student Wellness Team. This full-time, exempt, 10-month position provides individual, small-group, and classroom-based support services to students. Responsibilities include supporting students' social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs; providing counseling and positive behavioral supports; and consulting with teachers, families, and administrators. Counselors and Social Workers also observe students in school settings and collaborate with staff and families to identify and address students' strengths, needs, and areas of support.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Mental Health, Counseling & SEL Services Provide individual and group counseling services to students Deliver SEL instruction to support students' social-emotional development, self-regulation, peer relationships, and overall school success Support students experiencing crises, including suicidal ideation, self-injurious behaviors, bullying, trauma, anxiety, and depression Implement crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals to outside providers Support positive student behavior and provide consultation on behavioral interventions Support the Dean of Culture during bullying, harassment, and student safety investigations, as needed, by providing counseling support and follow-up services Special Education & Student Intervention Coordination Support students with IEPs and 504 Plans through coordinated therapeutic interventions, progress monitoring, implementation of IEP goals, accommodations, and behavioral supports Conduct FBAs and develop BIPs and individualized support plans Participate in IEP, 504, manifestation determination, and transition planning meetings Monitor student progress and evaluate intervention effectiveness through data collection Coordinate academic, behavioral, and post-secondary transition supports for students receiving specialized services Lead SST meetings for students referred for academic and behavioral concerns after targeted interventions have been implemented, and support referrals to special education when appropriate Family, Attendance, & Community Support Partner with families to address barriers impacting student success, including attendance and housing instability Coordinate McKinney-Vento services and connect families with community resources and social service agencies Serve as liaison between school staff, families, outside providers, and community agencies Schoolwide Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities Collaborate with administrators, teachers, and multidisciplinary teams to support schoolwide student needs Provide staff training related to mental health, SEL, and student wellness Maintain documentation, progress reports, and compliance records Perform additional duties as assigned Required Qualifications Master's degree in School Counseling, Social Work, or related field DC licensure/certification as a School Counselor or Social Worker, or eligibility for DC licensure Minimum of two years of school-based experience, preferably in an urban setting Ability to pass a background check Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills Commitment to student success and equity Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with student information systems and educational data Experience using data to support student interventions and decision-making Commitment to urban education and the mission of
