SUMMARY OF JOB

Youth Peer Support is a peer-delivered service provided to children, youth, and young adults who are middle school to 26 years of age. Designed to support youth and young adults with a serious emotional disturbance/serious mental illness (SED/SMI) through shared activities and interventions in the form of direct support, information sharing and skill-building. The goals of Youth Peer Support include supporting youth and young adults by building a strong relationship based on mutual respect and strategic self-disclosure to increase hope, confidence, self-advocacy skills, and decision-making abilities. Those eligible for this position must have lived experience, received treatment in the public mental health system, and are between ages of 18-26.

Physical Requirements:

• Requires coordination and manual dexterity of hands and/or eyes/hand/foot.
• Office environment with noise from computers, printers, and telephones.
• Use of computer for periods more than 30 minutes at a time.
• Possible eyestrain from extended periods of viewing computer screen.
• May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and parasites.
• Regular travel is required for this position.

Job Duties :

Assist individuals in developing their own plans for recovery. Leads or co-leads peer-delivered recovery groups. Attends therapy groups with clinicians to promote independence and recovery skills. Attends various appointments (i.e., therapy, case management, group therapy, psychiatric) to serve as a support and advocate for individuals. Models appropriate and effective coping and self-help skills Provides orientation and information about Pivotal programs. Assist with transportation as assigned to ensure access to mental health services, as well as other needed community services Provides information and assistance in the following activities as assigned: preplanning, treatment planning, crisis plans, self-determination and alternatives to guardianships Assist individuals in securing appropriate housing and employment, as desired Assists individuals with accessing entitlements (i.e., social security benefits, identification, birth certificates, insurance, etc.) Educate and promote individuals regarding personal self-help/care skills Advocate for individuals to ensure non-discrimination and community inclusion Provides case management related functions (linking, coordinating, monitoring, support, encouragement) Provides assistance aimed at supporting community functioning and independence. (i.e., shopping, laundry, cleaning, budgeting, utilizing public transportation) Provides information to staff in regard to carrying out programs, services, and supports related to member's needs. Follows Company's Code of Ethics, Corporate compliance guidelines, standards of business code of conduct and company policies, (such as attendance, punctuality dress code and work ethic) Protects client's rights by maintaining confidentially and reporting complaints, instances of suspected abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of property. Attends and participates in staff development function (such as required training and in-services) Completes annual training log by August 1. Other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

High school Diploma or equivalent, required. Candidate must be between ages 18 through 26, with lived experience with mental health challenges as a youth or young adult and who received mental health support as a youth. Willing and able to self-identify as a person who has received or is receiving behavioral health services and is prepared to use that experience in helping others. Experience receiving services in a variety of systems (such as child welfare, education, the justice system, vocation, housing, etc.) as a youth or young adult is preferred. Willing to be trained in the MDHHS approved curriculum and ongoing training model.
