In person - Bemidji, MN About Kai Shin Clinic Kai Shin Clinic is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and culturally responsive Alcohol and Drug Counselor to join our Bemidji outpatient substance use disorder program. This full-time position includes group and individual counseling, intake calls, treatment planning, care coordination, clinical documentation, compliance support, and team collaboration. Kai Shin Clinic places a strong emphasis on culturally responsive care for Native American and Indigenous individuals and communities. We are seeking a counselor who values relationship building, community engagement, cultural humility, and recovery-oriented treatment. Experience working with Native American, Indigenous, Tribal, rural, or culturally specific programs is highly valued. Primary Responsibilities Clinical Services Facilitate outpatient substance use disorder treatment groups. Conduct individual counseling sessions and recovery check-ins. Complete treatment plans, treatment plan reviews, progress notes, and other required clinical documentation. Monitor client progress and recommend appropriate treatment needs or levels of care. Participate in discharge planning, transition planning, and referrals. Maintain complete and timely clinical records. Participate in case consultation and treatment team communication. Intake and Care Coordination Conduct intake, screening, and initial calls with prospective and referred clients. Gather information related to treatment needs, substance use concerns, referrals, insurance, and current services. Explain clinic services and coordinate next steps for assessment, admission, and treatment. Provide ongoing care coordination with healthcare providers, behavioral health providers, Tribal programs, community organizations, referral sources, and recovery supports. Assist clients with referrals for medical care, behavioral health services, housing, social services, recovery support, and other community resources. Follow up on referrals and help reduce barriers to treatment participation. Compliance and Quality Support Follow Minnesota Statute 245G requirements and applicable ethical, regulatory, confidentiality, and documentation standards. Assist with reviewing treatment plans, progress notes, assessments, and other clinical documentation for completeness and timeliness. Identify missing or overdue documentation and assist with timely correction. Support internal chart reviews, quality reviews, compliance activities, and audit preparation. Participate in quality improvement and corrective action activities as assigned. Qualifications Required Candidates must hold an applicable credential in good standing, such as: Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC); Minnesota Alcohol and Drug Counselor - Temporary (ADC-T); or Qualifying UMICAD Alcohol and Drug Counselor credential, including
UMICAD ADC
III, when appropriate for the population served and within the scope permitted by the credential. UMICAD, the Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addictive Disorders, provides culturally specific training and professional certification for substance use disorder professionals serving American Indian communities.
Additional requirements include:
Experience providing substance use disorder treatment services. Experience facilitating treatment groups. Knowledge of recovery-oriented and person-centered care. Ability to conduct intake and screening calls. Strong clinical documentation, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to coordinate care with providers and community resources. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet documentation deadlines. Ability to work independently while collaborating with the treatment team. Reliable transportation and ability to work in person in Bemidji. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Native American, Indigenous, or Tribal communities. Experience with or certification through UMICAD. Understanding of historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, and culturally responsive treatment. Familiarity with Minnesota 245G regulations and documentation requirements. Experience with intake, admissions, care coordination, chart review, or clinical compliance. Previous supervisory, clinical leadership, or program leadership experience. Experience mentoring, coaching, or training clinical staff. Training and qualifications to provide clinical supervision for LADCs or individuals working toward LADC licensure in Minnesota. Ability to provide LADC clinical supervision in accordance with applicable Minnesota requirements is strongly preferred. Leadership and Clinical Supervision Candidates with appropriate qualifications may also assist with clinical leadership responsibilities, including: Providing LADC clinical supervision when qualified. Supporting counselors working toward LADC licensure. Providing case consultation and clinical guidance. Reviewing treatment plans and clinical documentation. Coaching staff on documentation quality and clinical practices. Assisting with onboarding and training of clinical staff. Supporting compliance with Minnesota 245G requirements and Kai Shin Clinic standards. Participating in quality improvement and clinical program development.
