The Addiction Counselor, reporting to the Clinical Director, is a full-time (40 hours per week), on-site counselor who provides individual and group substance use counseling as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, under clinical supervision. All work follows ASAM criteria, state and federal law, the counseling code of ethics, and SFRC's evidence-based practices, policies, and procedures. Requirements
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage an assigned caseload and meet productivity expectations set by SFRC. Facilitate substance use psychoeducation and counseling groups using evidence-based practices, including motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Provide individual substance use counseling. Gather assessment information and contribute to ASAM level-of-care recommendations and treatment plans under clinical supervision. Support relapse prevention planning, recovery skill-building, and connection to recovery support services. Complete timely, accurate documentation in the electronic health record in accordance with BHSD standards. Coordinate with the Case Manager and treatment team, and refer mental health concerns to licensed therapists on the team. Participate in regular clinical supervision as required by the counselor's license. Participate in initial and ongoing training on SFRC's evidence-based practices and maintain fidelity to them.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Knowledge of evidence-based practices for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, including motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Working knowledge of ASAM criteria and level-of-care determination. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Computer literacy sufficient to maintain compliance with BHSD (Behavioral Health Services Division) standards for computerized client assessments, the electronic health record, and data systems. Bilingual/bicultural (English/Spanish) preferred. Lived experience of recovery valued. Experience with co-occurring populations preferred.
Education and Experience:
Current New Mexico LSAA or LADAC license. Associate's or bachelor's degree in a behavioral health or human services field, or as required by the license held. Experience working with people with substance use disorders; supervised practicum or internship experience counts. For individuals in recovery from SUD, a minimum of two (2) years of uninterrupted abstinence from alcohol and/or drugs.
