A Mental or Behavioral Health Counselor works with patients to treat mental health problems. Assesses patients and assists with diagnosis, counseling and crisis intervention. Consults with nurses, doctors and psychiatrists. May work with specific populations, such as youth, senior citizens or substance abusers, in group settings, facilities or hospitals.
Under the regular supervision of the provider and medical administrator, collaborates with the physician, nurse practitioner, and other staff to provide essential medical care to the inmates of the Spartanburg County Detention Facility. The Behavioral Health Counselor will evaluate, diagnose, and treat mental health and substance use disorders. The Behavioral Health Counselor will develop individualized treatment plans, conduct individual or group therapy, and provide crisis intervention. The Behavioral Health Counselor manage symptoms, modify behaviors, and connect with essential community resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent. Possess a master's degree from an accredited program in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy or related field with supervised clinical experience Current state or national licensure preferred Specialization in areas such as substance abuse, trauma, or family therapy Minimum of 2 years of experience in mental health counseling Strong understanding of psychological theories and practices LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, and
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System. Possession of a valid driver's license issued in the state of South Carolina.
Pay:
$67,378.00 - $71,674.00 per year
