A Mental or Behavioral Health Counselor works with patients to treat mental health problems. Assesses patients and assists with diagnosis, counseling and crisis intervention. Consults with nurses, doctors and psychiatrists. May work with specific populations, such as youth, senior citizens or substance abusers, in group settings, facilities or hospitals.

Required:
Master's degree in social or behavioral sciences or related field required
Licenses or Certificates:
Licensed by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) as a professional counselor (LPC); a marriage and family therapist (LMFT), or clinical social worker (LCSW) is preferred. Licensed by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) as a professional counselor associate (LPC-A) or a marriage and family therapist associate (LMFT- A), may be considered. • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) seeking clinical licensure may be considered, if internal departmental supervisor is available only • Agency supervision for licensure requirements may not be available. Offers of employment may be contingent on ability to secure supervision. Due to Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) licensing requirements specific to external supervisory agreements for LMSW's, only internal departmental supervision is available for LMSW's. Such supervision is offered on a limited basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Individual, group, and family counseling in community (e.g., homes, schools), probation department, and detention. Triage mental health needs of juveniles in the pre-adjudication portion of the Youth Center of the High Plains. Assist with crisis counseling. Assess individual and family needs and make program recommendations. Develop treatment case plans. Conduct suicide screenings. Provide program summaries for assigned clients. Provide substance abuse services to clients and families. Coordinate referrals and collaborate with treatment professionals and juvenile justice professionals. Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, as assigned. Teach parenting skills. Conduct clinical reviews.
Knowledge of:
Cognitive behavioral therapy and behavior modification Training/experience/education in working with substance abuse (specific LCDC licensure not required) Modern principles of sociology, criminology, and child and adolescent psychology Social casework and counseling methods and techniques Ability to: Demonstrate communication skills, with ability to make public presentations to small and large groups, including parents, children, and civic groups Demonstrate skills to assess individual and family problems, needs, and strengths and to develop appropriate program plans Communicate effectively both orally and in writing Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department as well as with other community members
