SUMMARY:

The Counselor I - provide counseling services to assist students in maximizing their potential for personal and academic success. Exhibit a commitment to a developmental model by initiating and implementing interventions that promote a healthy campus environment and meet the mental health needs of the University community. Conducts crisis response, outreach and prevention services, and consultation with faculty, staff, and students as needed. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides individual, group, and couples counseling. Conducts intakes, screenings, and psychological assessments. Engages in client staffing, case management, consultation and referral. Provides crisis intervention services and consults with the director as needed. Engages in program development, educational outreach, and evaluation. Works collaboratively with internal and external colleagues. Consults with faculty and staff regarding services for students. Engages in professional development activities to maintain licensure. Provides service to the University through involvement in committees. Utilizes computer technology to support the Counseling Center functions. Utilizes Electronic Medical Records System to maintain client records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Master's degree in counseling, psychology or social work.

Experience:

One year of experience in counseling or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge /

Skills:

Understanding of relevant intervention models, programs and resources. Knowledge of the mental health needs of a university population. Excellent organizational and administrative abilities. Strong work ethic and sense of collegiality. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of student development. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.

Ability to:

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Licensing/Professional Certifications:

Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas or eligible for Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate in Texas to be obtained in the first 90 days. If eligible for LPC-Associate status, applicants must be able to provide an official transcript demonstrating a master's in counseling with 60 credit hours in counseling and related education programs and a copy of a passing NCE (Nationally Counselor Examination) score for review. Must maintain licensure for continued employment.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE

Doctorate in counseling, psychology, or social work. Three or more years' experience in counseling or related field. Experience in a college counseling Center or other relevant university setting. Bi-lingual (preferably Spanish speaking). Live within 30 minutes of campus. Advanced training in crisis management and trauma informed mental health care.
