A Mental or Behavioral Health Social Worker assesses and treats individuals with mental, emotional, or substance abuse problems. Activities may include individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, case management, client advocacy, prevention, and education.
The Crisis Worker provides crisis intervention services in both office and community settings for the Steuben County Community Mental Health Center. This position delivers clinical assessment, intervention, referral, and linkage services while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and community providers to support individuals experiencing mental health crises. This position is employed by Family Service Society, Inc. and assigned to Steuben County Community Services under contract.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide crisis intervention services in office and, along with licensed therapists, community settings throughout Steuben County. Conduct clinical assessments and develop appropriate treatment plans and interventions. Maintain accurate and timely documentation including client records, treatment plans, progress notes, reports, and billing in accordance with oversight agency requirements. Make referrals and provide linkages to appropriate community services and supports. Provide on-call coverage as assigned. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and participate in case consultations. Interface effectively with local providers, hospitals, law enforcement, and community agencies. Exercise sound clinical judgment and apply knowledge of DSM-V and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. Adhere to all regulatory and ethical standards. Participate in supervision, staff meetings, and required professional development activities. Maintain a valid New York State driver's license and driving record that meets agency insurability guidelines. Adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations governing confidentiality, privacy, billing, and documentation standards. Adhere to all policies and procedures of Family Service Society, Inc. and Steuben County Community Services, including attendance, dress code, and safety standards. Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or designee.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, human services, counseling, or a related behavioral health or human services field is required. A minimum of two years of relevant experience in behavioral health, mental health, crisis services, social services, or a related human services setting is required. Experience working with individuals in crisis and as part of a multidisciplinary team is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Strong communication, documentation, organization, and crisis intervention skills are required. Must demonstrate sound judgment, remain calm in crisis situations, work effectively with individuals and community providers, and recognize when consultation with a licensed clinician is needed. Proficiency with computers and electronic documentation systems is required.
Travel Requirements:
Regular travel throughout Steuben County is required as part of the position's community-based crisis response responsibilities. Must possess a valid driver's license and have a driving record that meets the agency's insurability guidelines to operate agency-owned vehicles.
Requires sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, copier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.
Background Check:
Must meet the requirements of the Mental Health Regulations regarding a State Central Register Clearance regarding history of abuse/maltreatment of children.
