Job Description

MENTAL HEALTH SOCIAL WORKER III
- Forensic
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position requires the performance of a professional social work duties in helping clients with social, emotional and related difficulties associated with their disabilities. The work is performed within prescribed routines with moderate leeway permitted in determining the scope of the work to be performed in helping the client to adjust into his old or new environment. The Mental Health Social Worker III functions under the general direction of a Mental Health Social Worker employee of higher rank who may define or limit the work to be performed.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative only) At the discretion of the Commissioner, clinical employees shall be required to participate in the emergency on-call system maintained by the Department of Mental Health; Participates in the intake and screening of new patients, evaluating and diagnosing the patient and problems; Participates as a team member in individual, group and family therapy; Provides social work services to help patients adjust to their disabilities and social environment; Refers clients to other governmental and non-governmental agencies; Coordinates various activity and treatment programs with social agencies; Compiles case studies, recording pertinent information; Plans with community mental health team and with community agencies to relate to the patient's treatment and rehabilitation program to his social situation prior to this discharge; Collects and maintains appropriate data from various sources such as professional staff and patient's families to establish an overall approach to the solution of patient's mental and social problems; Maintains information on community and health resources which can be utilized during the patient's care and subsequent to his discharge; Participates in the process of transfer of patients to other levels of treatment as appropriate; Interprets the department's function and philosophy to assigned clients; Works in conjunction with the client's physician and liaison with client's primary care physician; Performs community relations work with respect to specific department programs.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Good knowledge of the practice and procedures of social work and of the social factors affecting disease and disability; ability to organize time and effort to meet assigned situations and work demands; ability to interpret federal, state and local laws affecting the medical and health programs; ability to express and transmit knowledge clearly in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain relationships within and outside the department in a professional manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either:
(a) Graduation from a graduate school with a Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field and possession of a certificate or license to practice social work or mental health practitioner licensure or possession of a limited permit to practice (LMSW, LCSW or LMHC) issued by the New York State Department of Education; (b) Graduation from a New York State Department of Education approved program with a Ph.D. in Psychology with experience in the field of mental hygiene and possession of a certificate or license to practice social work or mental health practitioner licensure (LMSW, LCSW or LMHC) issued by the New York State Department of Education.
