TEN HOURS

When we hired Linda, she made one thing clear. Ten hours a week. No more. She had done the forty-hour thing. For decades. She had raised children, paid off a house, saved carefully, watched the numbers climb slowly enough that one day somebody at a bank finally told her: "You can retire." So she did. She and her husband bought good luggage. Italy. Arizona. A cruise through Alaska. She slept past six. Learned to drink coffee without taking it somewhere. It was everything she had worked for. She just wanted ten hours. Something useful between trips. Then we introduced her to Ruth. Ruth was eighty-seven and lived alone. The first few visits were ordinary. Groceries. Laundry. A ride to the doctor. Ruth apologized constantly. For walking slowly. For needing help with her coat. For asking Linda to reach things. One morning Linda arrived and found Ruth sitting by the window, already dressed. "You're early," Linda said. "No." Ruth looked at the clock. "I've been ready since seven." Linda wasn't due until ten. After that, Tuesdays felt different. Then we called Linda about another client. She reminded us about the ten hours. We said we remembered. A few weeks later, she called us. "If you still need someone for that gentleman…" Ten became fourteen. Then eighteen. She still traveled. Still disappeared to Arizona. Still sent pictures from places with better weather. But she always came back. Her husband eventually asked why she was working twice as much as she'd planned. She thought about Ruth waiting by the window. About the man who had started shaving again on the mornings she took him to breakfast. About all those years she'd traded her time for a paycheck because that's what adults did. And about how strange it was to finally have enough money to make time more valuable than money. "I spent forty years saving for my golden years," she told him. She picked up her keys. "I think this is what I was saving them for."

Pay:

$18.00 - $22.00 per hour Expected hours: 10.0 per week
