Job Description

Campus Minister Job Description UCM (United Campus Ministry) is a progressive, ecumenical ministry located on the campus of Western Michigan University. The ministry is in the midst of significant redevelopment, seeking to engage students in new ways. The half-time Campus Minister will work with the UCM Board of Directors to discern how to build relationships and programs that empower students to engage in the world with compassion and to act to promote the common good. A bachelor's degree or experience in a related field is preferred. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience. This is a salaried position, with an average of twenty hours' work per week expected. Hours may be distributed differently across fall, summer, and spring semesters if desired. Anticipated salary range $22,000 - 26,000. Benefits to be negotiated.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Engage and partner with organizations on campus and in the community that will enhance and broaden life experiences and opportunities for students. Participate in campus and community events to increase awareness and support for United Campus Ministry. Provide students with a safe and nurturing community where all are welcome regardless of religious affiliation, spiritual identity, race, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Provide opportunities for service learning by offering volunteer opportunities in the community. Provide opportunities for students to explore spirituality such as worship opportunities, book clubs, etc. Offer students care and support as they transition to independence. Engage with the UCM Board of Directors in activities to promote fundraising and awareness of UCM in the community and with area churches and religious organizations. Communicate with donors and support organizations to maintain relationships and support. Attend regular meetings of the Board of Directors and provide a written ministry report. Availability for weekend and evening hours is expected. Engage with the Board of Directors to develop and implement a budget.
The Successful Candidate will demonstrate:
Ability to articulate and model progressive Christian values. Commitment to spiritual growth and development for students. Ability to forge informal relationships with students while maintaining professional boundaries. Ability to forge relationships and connections with existing student service offices, student organizations and faculty. Willingness to experiment, to fail, and try again. Ability to articulate a strong commitment to diversity and to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to be flexible and sensitive to the changing culture of the student population as we rebuild our ministry. Ability to plan and lead student centered programming. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and uphold confidentiality. Ability to effectively manage emergencies and respond diplomatically to issues.
