Job Description

Youth Director Job Description — Mount Olivet UMC "As disciples of Christ, we will passionately follow the leading of the Holy Spirit as we unite to promote and nurture spiritual growth among all God's children." Reports to: Pastor (day-to-day); Staff Parish Relations Committee (job performance, goals, evaluation)

15-20 hours per week at $25 per hour Ministry Purpose The Youth Director provides spiritual, relational, organizational, and administrative leadership for the church's Youth Ministry (grades 6-12). This person will introduce, instruct, and nurture youth in their Christian faith and in life through Bible study, prayer, fellowship, worship, service, and evangelism — building relationships with students, parents, teachers, and church leaders that strengthen students' commitment to the church and growth in faith in Jesus Christ. The Youth Director is also responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting the volunteers who make youth programming possible. Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Volunteer Team Building — Recruit, train, and supervise a team of adult volunteers to lead and support youth programming.
  • Weekly Programming — Oversee lessons, activities, and teachers for Sunday morning Sunday School (middle school and high school) and Sunday evening/afternoon Youth Group, including purchasing or creating curriculum as needed.
  • Youth Breakfast & Bible Study — Plan and lead the weekly Thursday morning Youth Breakfast, mid-week activities, and Bible studies.
  • Event Coordination — Plan, promote, and carry out fun and engaging youth events, including local and non-local mission trips, retreats, Christmas programs, and seasonal/special events. Work closely with Children's Ministry to help build whole-family programming and events.
  • Family Engagement — Build relationships with youth families through family events and programming, with an ongoing focus on growing families' commitment to and involvement in the life of the church.
  • Confirmation — Assist the pastor in organizing and administering the annual Confirmation Classes.
  • SAFE Sanctuary Policies — Implement and maintain Safe Sanctuary principles and guidelines at all events, including oversight of required paperwork from all volunteers.
  • Be in the Community — Actively engage youth "where they are" — present at school and community extracurricular activities — and be available to students and families outside of scheduled church hours as needed.
  • Budget Oversight — Participate in the preparation and development of the annual Youth Ministry budget, working with the Finance Committee and implementing occasional fundraisers as needed.
  • Communication — Maintain regular communication of youth ministry news with the Pastor and congregation, including a regular email update to youth and families using current communication tools.
  • Social Media & Publicity — Administrate the Youth Ministry's social media outlets to connect with youth and families, in keeping with the church's social media policies, and publish activities through newsletters, bulletins, and the church calendar.
  • Office Hours — Attend weekly staff meetings and keep regular, consistent office hours appropriate to a part-time schedule.
  • Worship Leading — Occasionally plan and participate in Sunday morning worship and related functions such as youth praise and the Christmas program.
  • Strategic Planning — Develop a Youth Ministry strategic plan aligned with the mission and vision of Mount Olivet UMC, and ensure youth are considered and included in the broader life of the church.
  • Outreach & Recruitment — Actively recruit youth and young families through church-supported activities and community programs.
  • Staff & Community Partnership — Work closely with and support other staff and ministry areas of the church, and participate with other Christian ministry professionals in the community as fitting opportunities arise.
  • Other Duties — Other duties as assigned by the Pastor. Minimum Requirements
  • AA or BS in Education, Religious Studies, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitation experience in youth ministry.
  • Comfortable and familiar with social media and current communication technologies.
  • 24 years of age or older (minimum age required by the church's vehicle insurance provider). Core Competencies
