Job Description

Job Summary St. John's is a lively learning community of faith that continually seeks to grow in understanding of God's word and world and out of that understanding to share God's love in word and deed. Our Sunday morning faith formation time is led by volunteer teachers and helpers, supported by a Faith Formation Committee, providing many and varied educational opportunities for children through adults. We are seeking a part-time (estimated 20 hours per week) salaried, overtime-exempt, "Children, Youth and Family Minister" to oversee, organize, and coordinate the children's, youth, and family ministries at St. John's. Compensation is negotiable based on experience and qualifications but is estimated at $30,000 annually. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Work with the Lead Pastor and the Faith Formation Committee to provide leadership for the children's and youth faith formation programming, fill a leadership role at Vacation Bible School, and assist the Lead Pastor with the development and selection of curriculum. b. Be active on Sunday mornings a minimum of twice per month with the educational hour, including leading large-group Sunday School openings, sharing Sunday School responsibilities with volunteer Sunday School teachers, preparing and delivering the children's sermon, and assisting the Lead Pastor, as requested, with Confirmation. Develop ways for the youth to become further engaged in Sunday services and be an active part of worship leadership. c. In conjunction with the Faith Formation Committee and other volunteer leaders, plan the annual retreat and mission opportunities for the youth to include content development, communication and marketing, budgeting, fundraising, registration, scheduling and activities, etc. d. Attend staff meetings, Faith Formation Committee meetings, and, as necessary, Congregation Council meetings, either in person or virtually. e. In conjunction with the Parish Administrator and the Faith Formation Committee, communicate with families, youth and volunteers, staff and the congregation to inform all about current and upcoming youth and family programs through the most effective channels.
RELATIONSHIPS AND EXPECTATIONS
  • Ensure that teachings and interactions with youth are consistent with ELCA Lutheran doctrine.
  • Encourage questions and dialogue about the Lutheran faith tradition.
  • Foster meaningful relationships with youth and families by being a welcoming and accessible presence, engaging with St. John's members, visitors, and those seeking a church community through a variety of ministry activities and personal connections.
  • The Director reports to the Lead Pastor.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • Demonstrated experience in leading/guiding individuals including but not limited to children, youth and families on their faith journey. Experience in a congregation or other ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or one of its full-Communion partner denominations is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to identify issues, use discretion, and maintain good boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills along with interpersonal skills across an intergenerational community.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, simultaneously manage multiple tasks, and adhere to agreed-upon guidelines.
  • Ability to adapt to flexible work hours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to pass all background checks and clearances.
  • Ability to operate standard office machines and communicate with co-workers and stakeholders.
  • This is an active position which regularly requires walking, standing, lifting, stooping, bending, and pushing/pulling.
  • Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, alcohol, inhalants, or other chemical substances or controlled substances.
