Job Description

About Cross of Grace Cross of Grace Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We are a relatively new congregation, having been founded in 2001, so don't have a lot of the baggage that comes with older, long-established institutions. Our theology is undergirded by a reliance upon the unconditional love of God and we do our best to share that grace with no strings attached. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in and lead ministry at Cross of Grace. Our worship life is influenced by our denominational affiliation, meaning we are guided by the lectionary and have roots in "traditional" liturgical worship. However, we are flexible, have fun, and don't take ourselves too seriously, incorporating contemporary, modern music, as well as a variety of instruments, into our worship ministry, including a vocal choir and two handbell choirs. This role is part of the worship ministry at Cross of Grace. The role is expected to be highly collaborative with other staff and with our volunteer musicians. In addition to a focus around the impact of music as part of the ministry, the role involves planning, communication, and cultivation of additional ways to incorporate fine arts as part of the ministry at Cross of Grace.
Preferred Qualifications:
Formal training in and experience with organ performance Formal training in and experience with piano performance Five years' experience in church music/ministry Familiarity with and understanding of "traditional" church litergics
Essential Functions:
In collaboration with the pastoral staff, plan and provide liturgical organ and keyboard music, and coordinate special music and volunteer musicians for the "traditional" 8:30 a.m. worship services, including but not limited to Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Thanksgiving Eve, and Easter. Meet with the pastors and the contemporary music leader, as needed, for purposes of planning and communication, as well as to review selections and ensure they complement the readings and/or the message for the services and church seasons. These meetings will be scheduled in consultation with the pastors, preferably during normal staff office hours on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Direct the traditional service's vocal choir and provide accompaniment, as needed, during the choir season from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Provide a rehearsal and performance schedule for the choir with rehearsal occurring on a weekday evening. This part of the job can be negotiated. Ensure that selected music is covered by necessary copyright licenses and regularly report usage of copyrighted material used by the congregation in our 8:30 a.m. worship service and by our handbell and vocal choirs, as needed. Invite, encourage and accommodate congregational Partners in Mission (including youth and children) to contribute to the music ministry as appropriate, participating in groups or leading singing and/or adding other musical accompaniment to our worship. Create, adapt, and/or transpose music, as needed for vocal or instrumental use. Provide organ/keyboard music for weddings and funerals, consulting with couples and families, as necessary. (Additional compensation, as specified in the congregation's statements of policy and procedure, will be paid for such services.) As needed, and when mutually agreeable, serve as a musician/leader for the Contemporary Service in the absence of the Contemporary Service Leader. Share ideas for other ways to expand the ministry that Cross of Grace enables, whether within our congregation or as outreach, and initiate development when appropriate. This position offers an opportunity to use your musical talents to lead others in worship and create a meaningful experience for the congregation. If you have a heart for worship and a desire to mentor others in their musical journey, we would love to hear from you!
