General Statement of Job The main focus of this position is to provide spiritual guidance and ministry to inmates at the county jail through counseling, services, and support. The position of Senior Chaplain is responsible for various projects, training, and provision of community services, as they relate to inmates, on behalf of the Sheriff. The position supervises non-supervisory personnel. The position reports directly to the Detention Facility Director/Major.
Essential Job Functions Must possess:
Pastoral counseling skills working one-on-one directly with the inmates, utilizing such skills to provide counseling with personal problems, grief, stress issues and addiction intervention; Mediation skills as applied when inmate personalities clash, tempers flare, situations escalate and when Chaplain intervention is requested or needed; Communications skills to answer inmate and staff questions (as they relate to the inmates), policy changes, special religious observances, and within the Chaplain's Section for daily communication with visitors, staff, fellow Chaplains, via phone and e-mail; Ability to exercise flexibility to deal with daily policy changes, and continually meet the ever-changing demands of service to inmates and religious volunteers at the county jail, and keep own skills up-to-date. Understanding /experience with Addiction-related issues is of highest importance. Leading religious services and coordinating Volunteer Chaplains to provide inmates with opportunity to attend at least one religious service per week, thus insuring the reasonable constitutional protection of their religious rights; coordinates religious volunteer services with Programs Coordinator - assuring no conflict for facility scheduling; updates religious volunteer lists; Oversees religious volunteers; Mentors/guides new volunteer chaplains; Trains/orients new religious volunteers and new staff regarding the role of the Chaplain; maintain records of all religious volunteer training, giving special attention to annual PREA certification by all volunteers; Counsels inmates at the county jail through Inmate Kiosk requests, Deputy referrals, and individual requests; Provides and performs death notifications to inmates, which includes crisis intervention skills, as well as, accommodation and compassion; Provides a "ministry of presence" throughout the jail in being available for inmate intervention, mediation, and "on the spot" counseling; Serves as Liaison with community Rehab Treatment facilities/Halfway houses; Secure and screen donated religious literature and texts for compliance with Facility regulations regarding contraband; distributes to each housing area donated religious material and texts; Coordinate with Kitchen Supervisor any special religious diet requirements and/or religious holiday dietary observance requirements; maintains records of inmate service attendance; maintain all relevant databases for inmate special requests, service attendance, training of volunteers, etc. as necessary. Additional Job Functions Represent Sheriff Department and Detention Facility through various community contacts including Pastors, Church Groups, Religious Organizations, Charitable organizations, Business Organization as well as individuals in the community as necessary; speak at functions upon request to represent the Sheriff and his staff by communicating the Chaplaincy function within Spartanburg County Detention Facility; deliver informational speeches, reports, and orientation before audiences and groups that include people that are not organization employees;

Answers questions with a brief response or providing standard information to Pastors, inmate relatives, citizens, visitors, callers, supervisors, or other employees, (i.e. direct people to offices, answer the telephone, convey summary instructions or results) to other staff; interviews or discusses detailed information, frequently involving customer/citizen problems or complaints, (i.e. interviews customers or employees, discusses detailed information on the telephone, including having to resolve customer/employee problems); composes sensitive, non-routine correspondence requiring tact and diplomacy and/or composes reports or summaries for which established formats generally do not exist. Senior Chaplain coordinates with Sheriff's patrol Senior Chaplain any requests from Detention Facility Deputies regarding financial assistance from the Sheriff Department Chaplains' Benevolence fund. Support co-workers. Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Training and Experience High school graduate and/or equivalent. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to pass job-related written, mathematical, and/or psychological tests. Must possess valid certifications of as required by the Facility. The minimum level of education required to perform this job is a Bachelor's degree gained through four-year college/university academic program, or specialized technical training of equivalent length. A minimum amount of total related experience an employee must have prior to starting this job is at least 3 years of service as a Chaplain or Volunteer in a detention or incarceration facility. Qualified and ordained as a Clergy member; equivalency to CPE training; ordained and licensed Clergy; Letter of good standing from Religious organization or Church where you are member/attend.
