Job Description

South Main seeks a full-time Minister of Evangelism and Missions who will join us in our mission of Engaging and Equipping Others to Experience and Share God s Transforming Love . We are praying for a ministry leader who personally shares the gospel, equips others to do the same, mobilizes people for local and global missions, and builds meaningful, accountable relationships with missionaries, church planters, and ministry partners. Position Purpose The Minister of Evangelism and Missions leads South Main s outward-facing Great Commission ministry by equipping the congregation, mobilizing members for local, cross-cultural, and global mission, and cultivating healthy relationships with the ministries and missionaries South Main supports. Primary Responsibilities The Minister of Evangelism and Missions will: Model a growing relationship with Christ through personal evangelism and active engagement in local and cross-cultural ministry. Develop practical evangelism training and provide coaching that helps members share their testimony, explain the gospel, begin spiritual conversations, and practice evangelism where they live, work, learn, and play. Identify, organize, and lead local, regional, national, and global mission opportunities aligned with South Main s theology and priorities. Recruit, prepare, equip, and care for participants before, during, and after mission experiences. Strengthen and regularly evaluate relationships with missionaries, church plants, apartment ministries, and ministry organizations, emphasizing prayer, communication, service, theological alignment, accountability, gospel fruitfulness, stewardship, and congregational involvement. Develop local outreach that crosses cultural, linguistic, generational, and socioeconomic boundaries in the greater Houston area. Preach periodically at the Pastor s invitation and teach practical evangelism and missions equipping through Auxano and other churchwide environments. Partner with children s, youth, young-adult, adult, and family ministry leaders to create age-appropriate pathways into evangelism and mission. Identify and develop volunteer leaders, mission team leaders, church planters, missionaries, and others called to long-term gospel service. Develop annual ministry goals, calendars, plans, and budget recommendations and regularly evaluate participation, stewardship, partnership health, and ministry effectiveness. Character, Competencies, and Chemistry of a Strong Candidate A strong candidate will be: A devoted follower of Christ whose life and ministry reflect spiritual maturity, humility, integrity, courage, compassion, and love for the church. Theologically aligned with South Main Baptist Church and Texas Baptists. A current practitioner of personal evangelism who leads from lived obedience rather than theory alone. Passionate about equipping the whole congregation for everyday gospel witness and Great Commission service. Relational, trustworthy, culturally attentive, and able to minister with humility across language, ethnic, generational, and socioeconomic differences. A clear biblical communicator who is comfortable preaching, teaching, training, and engaging people personally. Organized, dependable, and attentive to stewardship and follow-through. Collaborative and team-oriented, with a willingness to receive ministry direction from the Pastor and work closely with the Executive Minister and church staff.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
Demonstrated experience in personal evangelism and hands-on participation or leadership in outreach, missions, church planting, or cross-cultural ministry. Demonstrated ability to equip, mobilize, and care for volunteers, ministry teams, or emerging leaders. Ability to communicate Scripture and the gospel clearly while planning and carrying out ministry with strong relational, organizational, and stewardship skills. Agreement with the mission, beliefs, ministry direction, and personnel expectations of South Main Baptist Church. Ability and willingness to travel locally, nationally, and internationally as ministry opportunities require.
Preferred:
Bachelor s or graduate degree in ministry, missions, evangelism, intercultural studies, theology, or a related field. Previous vocational ministry leadership in missions, evangelism, church planting, or cross-cultural ministry. Experience leading mission teams or outreach initiatives and developing healthy relationships with missionaries, church plants, apartment ministries, or community-based organizations. Bilingual ability or demonstrated effectiveness ministering across language barriers, especially within the diversity of greater Houston. Reporting and Ministry Alignment The Minister of Evangelism and Missions reports to the Executive Minister for HR and employment matters, including compensation, personnel policies, formal performance reviews, scheduling expectations, conflict resolution, and formal accountability. The Minister receives functional ministry supervision from the Pastor for missions and evangelism vision, priorities, strategy, preaching and teaching opportunities, coaching, and ministry evaluation. The Minister also works with the Executive Minister on budgets, calendars, policies, travel procedures, and staff coordination.
