Architectural Assistant -
Site Visits & Field Surveys Location:
San Jose, CA About the Role First Stop Construction is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Architectural Assistant - Site Visits & Field Surveys to join our growing team specializing in Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), home additions, garage conversions, and residential remodeling. This role combines field work with office responsibilities and is ideal for someone interested in architecture, drafting, construction, or residential design. Working directly under the Project Manager and Production Manager, you will perform field surveys, document existing site conditions, take accurate measurements, prepare reports, and assist in developing permit-ready construction drawings. You will typically perform up to three residential site visits per day, gathering the information needed for our design team to create accurate plans. We are looking for someone who is flexible, hands-on, eager to learn, and willing to take ownership of projects. This position offers tremendous opportunities for growth into architectural design, project management, and construction management. Mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related travel. Responsibilities Field Responsibilities Visit residential properties throughout the Bay Area (typically up to three appointments daily). Perform accurate field measurements of existing homes, garages, and accessory structures. Conduct comprehensive site surveys and document existing conditions. Photograph all relevant property conditions for design and permitting. Assess site accessibility, grading, setbacks, utilities, easements, and other factors affecting project feasibility. Identify potential design or construction challenges. Prepare detailed field reports after each site visit. Verify dimensions against available plans when applicable. Maintain professional communication with homeowners during site visits. Office Responsibilities Prepare existing-condition (as-built) floor plans. Assist in drafting architectural plans using AutoCAD, Revit, or similar software. Create and revise floor plans, elevations, site plans, and construction details. Coordinate with architects, engineers, surveyors, and permit expeditors. Assist in preparing permit-ready construction documents. Review municipal correction comments and assist with drawing revisions. Organize digital project files and maintain drawing revisions. Track project progress and maintain drafting schedules. Support the Project Manager with project coordination tasks. Assist in preparing project submittals and permit packages. Research zoning regulations, setback requirements, and local building codes. Verify project information using city records and available property documentation. Maintain organized digital records, photographs, and field documentation. Assist with project coordination between office staff, field personnel, engineers, and city agencies. Support other departments with project-related responsibilities as needed. Qualifications Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or similar drafting software is preferred but not required. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills. Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced environment. Hands-on approach with a willingness to learn. Comfortable balancing office responsibilities with field work. Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to read residential construction plans is a plus. Familiarity with residential construction methods is preferred. Interest in architecture, construction, engineering, or residential design. Requirements Valid California driver's license. Reliable personal vehicle. Comfortable traveling throughout San Jose and surrounding Bay Area communities. Ability to work outdoors and indoors in varying conditions. Comfortable walking construction sites and taking detailed measurements. Ability to lift and carry measuring equipment, ladders, and field tools when necessary. Preferred Skills Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or Bluebeam. Familiarity with California residential building codes. Understanding of ADU regulations and permitting processes. Experience creating permit-ready residential plans. Knowledge of residential framing and construction methods. Ability to identify discrepancies between existing site conditions and available plans. Pay:
