Prior applicants are still under consideration. The mission of the SC Commission for the Blind (SCCB), established in 1966, is to provide quality individualized vocational rehabilitation services, independent living services, and prevention-of-blindness services to South Carolinians who are blind or visually impaired leading to competitive employment and social and economic independence. Our goal is to become a national model vocational rehabilitation agency for people who are blind and visually impaired, demonstrating quality services, accountability, innovation, effectiveness and efficiency. Do you want a career doing meaningful work that has a positive impact on people's lives? Have you thought about a career in state government but weren't sure how or where to begin? The SCCB is looking for hard working passionate individuals such as you! Every SCCB employee is important and a career with the SCCB will give you the opportunity to grow professionally and personally as you play a crucial role in the delivery of services to South Carolinians with visual impairments. We're looking for reliable and engaging Residential Assistant, approximately 32 hours per week, to support blind and visually impaired consumers in the Columbia area.
Duties include:
Provide general evening supervision and support to consumers in the residential facility. Maintain a visible staff presence and assist consumers with routine non-medical needs and questions. Reinforce Training Center expectations regarding independence, safety, professionalism, conduct, and residential rules. Monitor consumer sign-in/sign-out and expected return times in accordance with current Training Center residential procedures. Assist with and encourage participation in scheduled evening activities, study, homework, and independent-living practice. Provide basic assistance with Training Center equipment, common areas, and activity setup/cleanup. Conduct routine checks of residential/common areas and report maintenance, safety, behavioral, or other concerns to appropriate staff. Reinforce visitor, quiet-hour, room-visitation, and residential expectations. Respond to routine consumer concerns and contact nursing, security, supervisory staff, or emergency services when an issue is outside the assistant's role. Do not provide medical assessment, medication administration, medical advice, or other nursing functions. Document significant incidents, concerns, consumer conduct, and relevant information for communication to appropriate Training Center staff. Support emergency procedures, evacuations, and accountability of consumers as directed. Promote consumer independence rather than routinely completing tasks consumers are capable of performing themselves. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and consumer confidentiality. Perform other non-medical residential and Training Center support duties as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements A high school diploma and relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in human services, healthcare, or government settings.
