Launch Your Career with
Purpose:
Help Gifted Teens in Foster Care Reach Their Potential House Assistant | Xavier House Unlimited, Inc. Do you believe that where a young person starts does not have to determine where they finish? Are you an emerging professional in social work, psychology, education, counseling, child welfare, or a related field who believes deeply in the transformative power of education and a safe environment? Do you have strong emotional intelligence, intellectual curiosity, and a genuine interest in helping bright, complex teenagers discover what they are capable of—and supporting them as they work toward a future that may include college, graduate school, technical education, or other forms of post-secondary study ? If so, Xavier House may be the place for you. Xavier House is a specialized foster care group home serving teen girls who demonstrate high intellectual potential, strong personalities, and significant resilience . These young women have experienced adversity, but their circumstances do not define their potential. We believe that with the right environment, relationships, structure, and encouragement, young people can develop the confidence and skills necessary to pursue ambitious futures. We are seeking a House Assistant who is more than a caregiver. We are looking for someone who can become a mentor, role model, academic encourager, and positive influence in the daily lives of our residents. This position is particularly well suited for someone who values higher education and advanced studies and is excited by the opportunity to help talented young people recognize themselves as future college students, professionals, leaders, and lifelong learners. What You'll Be Doing Partner with the on-shift House Parent to create an engaging, structured, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally safe home environment. Build authentic, respectful relationships with residents while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Be fully present and actively engaged with residents—whether hiking, cooking, studying, participating in activities, or helping navigate emotionally challenging moments. Support residents with homework, academic organization, study habits, research, test preparation, and educational goals . Encourage residents to think beyond high school and begin envisioning their post-secondary future , including college, university, vocational programs, certifications, and other educational pathways. Help residents develop the habits and skills necessary for academic success, including time management, organization, self-advocacy, communication, persistence, and independent learning. Encourage curiosity, critical thinking, intellectual exploration, and a genuine love of learning. Participate in and help facilitate recreational, cultural, and educational activities that expand residents' interests and perspectives. Serve as a positive role model who demonstrates that education, personal growth, discipline, and lifelong learning matter . Model emotional regulation, respectful communication, healthy boundaries, accountability, and thoughtful decision-making. Help residents develop practical life skills—from laundry and budgeting to planning, problem-solving, debate, and independent decision-making. Bring energy, creativity, patience, humor, and compassion to a setting where no two days are the same . Who We're Looking For We are looking for someone who is curious about the world and genuinely excited about learning .
The ideal candidate:
Places a meaningful value on higher education, intellectual development, and lifelong learning . Is interested in helping young people understand that their academic abilities can become a pathway to greater opportunities. Can see potential in a teenager even when that potential is hidden behind challenging behavior, distrust, frustration, or a big personality. Is comfortable talking with teens about college, careers, goals, books, ideas, current events, and the possibilities available to them after high school . Is a natural relationship-builder with a calm, confident, engaging presence. Possesses strong emotional intelligence and can remain grounded when situations become emotionally intense. Has prior experience working or volunteering with adolescents, youth programs, education, child welfare, social services, or a related field. Is pursuing or considering a career in psychology, social work, education, counseling, child welfare, or another helping profession . Understands that academic success and emotional well-being are interconnected—and that young people often need both encouragement and accountability to thrive. Holds a high school diploma; college coursework, an associate degree, bachelor's degree, or current enrollment in higher education is strongly preferred . Holds a valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Can pass a Level II Criminal History Background Check. Is willing and able to work in a fast-paced residential environment where emotional presence, consistency, and judgment matter as much as logistics . Why Xavier House?

This Is More Than a Job—It's an Opportunity to Change a Trajectory. At Xavier House, you will have the opportunity to influence young women during a critical period in their development. You will work alongside experienced, emotionally intelligent mentors while engaging every day with some of the most unique, intellectually capable, resilient, and challenging youth in the foster care system . You will gain practical experience in: Trauma-informed care Adolescent development Academic and educational mentoring Leadership and mentorship Conflict resolution and de-escalation Emotional regulation Communication and relationship-building Life-skills development Team collaboration For an emerging professional, this can be a powerful foundation for a future career in social work, psychology, education, counseling, child welfare, or other people-centered professions . Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to help a young person begin to see a future that may once have seemed out of reach. We are looking for people who don't just want to supervise teenagers. We are looking for people who want to help them grow. To Apply Please submit your resume along with a brief explanation addressing: What draws you to working with challenging, high-potential youth in foster care? What does higher education and lifelong learning mean to you? How would you encourage a talented high school student to consider and prepare for post-secondary education?
