Job Description New River Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a state-wide system of 23 community colleges. The college is located on a one-hundred plus acre site at the intersection of U.S. Routes 11 and 100 in Dublin, Virginia with an instructional site in Christiansburg. The campus provides modern, well-equipped facilities for the career technical education programs as well as for the college transfer programs. Approximately 4,000 students comprise the student body.

The college serves the educational needs of the public and assumes a duty to help provide the requirements for trained workers in the region through a combined effort with local industry, business, professions, and government. Duties:
- Teach a minimum of 15 semester hours of human services courses during both the fall and spring semesters to prepare students for employment in the human services and helping professions and/or for transfer into baccalaureate social work programs.
- Maintain at least 10 hours of student engagement availability each week (office hours).
- Develop and revise course plans that identify student learning outcomes and ensure program standards.
- Provide leadership and oversight for the human services degree and certificate programs, including curriculum development, managing the human services advisory committee, developing marketing and recruitment efforts, and collaborating with student services to provide student advising and support success.
- Develop recruitment, retention, completion, and career placement initiatives.
- Partner, collaborate, and maintain professional relationships with human services agencies and organizations.
- Assist in the selection and creation of instructional materials.
- Recommend curriculum changes to upgrade and integrate students' learning.
- Develop and implement student retention and success initiatives.
- Develop and manage transfer agreements with four-year universities.
- Work with student services advisors to provide holistic support and advising.
- Assist the Division of Arts and Sciences with administrative and/or committee work.
- Participate in department, division and college discussions, meetings and initiatives.
- Engage in professional development
- Support the college's mission to "give everyone the opportunity to learn and develop the right skills so lives and communities are strengthened."
- Complete other duties as assigned. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in human services, social work, human development, or a related field; or master's degree with a concentration in human services, social work, human development, or a related field (a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline).
- A minimum of two years of occupational experience in human services or a related field.
- Demonstrated commitment to the community college mission.
- Demonstrated current knowledge in the field of human services and expertise in best practices.
- Commitment to ensuring the relevance and currency of human services curriculum.
- Ability to communicate effectively in teaching/learning situations both orally and in written form.
- Commitment to and ability to implement teaching strategies that foster student retention and student success.
- Commitment to engaging students through innovative teaching approaches, including use of technology as a teaching and learning tool.
- Willingness to develop and teach online, hybrid, traditional face-to-face, and hyflex courses.
- Willingness to maintain relevance and currency of human services curriculum.
- Commitment to assessing the human services program and its courses for effectiveness.
- Fairness and flexibility in understanding and working with a wide variety of students.
- Demonstrated ability to promote and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with college faculty, administrators, and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships with human services agencies and organizations.
- Credentials or willingness to become credentialed to teach in a second discipline, i.e., psychology or education, within three years.
- Finalists will be asked to present a sample teaching lesson
- Additional Considerations Additional factors that may be considered in applicant review:
- Previous record of teaching excellence.
- Previous teaching experience within post-secondary education, specifically a community college setting
- Experience with online instruction and learning management systems.
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential.
