Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Camp Director provides year-round leadership for the planning, development, implementation and growth of the North Suburban YMCA's Summer Day Camp program. The Camp Director is responsible for providing a high-quality camp experience focused on safety, belonging, relationship building, fun and the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. This position works closely with the Senior Director of Camp & Youth Programming to oversee camp operations, develop programming, recruit and train staff, support camper and family engagement, manage program resources and ensure established enrollment, quality, safety and financial goals are achieved. During the summer season, the Camp Director serves as a highly visible leader responsible for the successful daily operation of Summer Day Camp. During the school year, the position focuses on camp planning and development, staff recruitment, program growth, community outreach and supporting additional youth and family programming.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Oversees the planning, development and implementation of all aspects of the YMCA Summer Day Camp program. 2. Works with the Senior Director of Camp & Youth Programming to develop annual camp schedules, activities, special events, field trips, traditions and new program opportunities. 3. Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, coaches and evaluates seasonal camp staff. 4. Provides direct leadership and supervision to camp leadership staff and supports their development as effective supervisors and youth development professionals. 5. Develops and facilitates comprehensive pre-camp and ongoing staff training focused on camper safety, supervision, behavior management, program quality, staff expectations and the YMCA mission. 6. Maintains a strong and visible leadership presence throughout daily camp operations and actively participates in camp activities, special events, rallies, field trips and other camp experiences. 7. Creates and maintains a camp culture centered on safety, inclusion, belonging, positivity, relationship building and fun. 8. Ensures appropriate camper supervision and adherence to all YMCA policies, procedures, emergency action plans and applicable health and safety requirements. 9. Serves as a leader during emergencies, incidents and other situations requiring immediate response and sound decision-making. 10. Models and supports positive youth development and behavior-management practices and assists staff with camper behavior, group dynamics, inclusion needs and other participant concerns. 11. Develops positive relationships with campers and works to ensure every participant feels welcomed, included, supported and engaged. 12. Develops positive relationships with parents and caregivers and provides timely, professional communication regarding camper experiences, questions, concerns, incidents and program information. 13. Oversees camper arrival and dismissal procedures, attendance, group assignments, program transitions and other daily operational needs. 14. Coordinates camp field trips, transportation, vendors, special events, program spaces, schedules and other camp logistics. 15. May be required to operate YMCA-owned vehicles, including a 14-passenger mini bus, for the transportation of program participants, staff, supplies, and equipment in accordance with YMCA policies and applicable laws and safety requirements. 16. Purchases, organizes, inventories and maintains camp supplies and equipment while serving as a responsible steward of YMCA resources. 17. Maintains accurate camper, staff, training, attendance, incident, behavior and other required program records. 18. Assists the Senior Director of Camp & Youth Programming with the development and monitoring of the annual camp budget and operates programs in accordance with established financial goals. 19. Monitors registration, enrollment, program capacity, waitlists, camper retention and participation trends and identifies opportunities for continued program growth. 20. Supports camper recruitment and retention through camp fairs, open houses, school visits, community events and other outreach opportunities. 21. Collaborates with Marketing, Membership, Aquatics, Facilities, Registration and other YMCA departments to ensure successful camp operations and promote camp within the community. 22. Evaluates camp programming, participation data, family feedback and staff feedback to identify opportunities to continuously improve the camper and family experience. 23. Supports end-of-season camp wrap-up, including staff evaluations, program evaluation, inventory, records, reporting and planning for the following summer. 24. Completes and maintains Praesidium Child Abuse Prevention, CPR/AED/First Aid and other required trainings as a condition of employment to support our commitment to maintaining a safe environment for youth and vulnerable populations. 25. Serves as the designated camp leader when the Senior Director of Camp & Youth Programming is unavailable or as assigned. 26. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
: 1. Must be at least 21 years of age. 2. Bachelor's degree in recreation, education, youth development, child development or a related field preferred. 3. Minimum of two years of experience working with school-aged children in a camp, recreation, education, childcare or youth development setting preferred. 4. Previous camp leadership experience strongly preferred. 5. Previous experience supervising, coaching and developing staff required. 6. Ability to recruit, train, supervise, motivate and provide meaningful feedback to seasonal employees and young adults. 7. High level of energy, enthusiasm, initiative, professionalism and commitment to providing an exceptional camp experience. 8. Strong organizational, leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. 9. Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt quickly within a fast-paced and constantly changing camp environment. 10. Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities. 11. Ability to effectively monitor participant behavior and use positive youth development and behavior-management techniques. 12. Ability to enforce safety policies and procedures while maintaining a positive, engaging and fun camp environment. 13. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with children, families, staff and people from different backgrounds. 14. CPR, First Aid and AED certifications required. 15. Child Abuse Prevention training required within 30 days of hire. 16. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with YMCA insurance requirements. Must be willing and able to complete required YMCA driver training and operate YMCA vehicles, including a 14-passenger mini bus, as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Ability to walk, stand and sit, including on the floor, for extended periods of time. 2. Position requires frequent movement throughout indoor and outdoor program spaces and may require bending, lifting, kneeling, crouching, reaching or running. 3. Ability to actively participate in games, activities, field trips and recreational programming with children. 4. Ability to lift and move program supplies and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. 5. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in varying summer weather conditions. 6. Ability to quickly respond to emergency situations and move throughout program areas as necessary. 7. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate with children, staff, parents, caregivers and YMCA members.
Pay:
$22.00 - $24.00 per hour
