Job Description
Position Overview Southside Community Kitchen (SCK) serves free, well-balanced lunches in a welcoming, inclusive environment for individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Volunteers are at the heart of this work. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, scheduling, supporting, and retaining volunteers who help make SCK's daily meal service possible. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, thrives in a community-focused environment, and is highly organized while remaining flexible and warm. The Volunteer Coordinator ensures that volunteers feel welcomed, prepared, appreciated, and connected to SCK's mission. Core Responsibilities Volunteer Recruitment & Onboarding Screen and recruit individual and group volunteers to support meal service and kitchen operations at UU Lansing and Galilee. Coordinate volunteer orientation, onboarding, basic training and necessary paperwork/documentation of training and policies outlined in the volunteer handbook. Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers and community groups. Scheduling & Coordination Manage volunteer schedules for daily meal service, ensuring adequate coverage. Communicate clearly and promptly with volunteers, Head Chef and Executive Director regarding schedules, changes, and needs. Maintain volunteer records (call logs and updates), hours, and contact information. Ensure all daily responsibilities are covered by other staff or volunteers prior to scheduled leave time and/or, if possible, for sick time. On-Site Support & Engagement Work at the host site on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9-1:30 pm and at the second site on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 - 1:00 pm and use remaining time for telephoning, scheduling and assisting the Director. Greet volunteers, provide clear direction, and ensure they feel welcomed and supported. Work closely with the Head Chef and Hospitality and Facilities Coordinator to align volunteers with daily needs. Maintain the storeroom at the host church, arranging food staples, supplies, pots, and pans for efficient use. Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive volunteer environment. Address questions or concerns and resolve minor issues as they arise. Volunteer Retention & Appreciation Build strong relationships with volunteers to encourage continued involvement. Assist with volunteer recognition efforts, including thank-you communications and events. Gather feedback from volunteers to improve the volunteer experience. Administration & Reporting Track volunteer hours and participation for internal use, grants, and reporting. Track meals served at both host sites. Assist with basic data entry and reporting related to volunteer engagement. Support outreach and communication efforts related to volunteer opportunities. Understand that this job requires some flexibility in responsibilities and hours. Agree to accept other duties as requested by the Director. Skills & Qualifications Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Highly organized, dependable, and detail-oriented. Comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds. Ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, people-centered environment. Warm, calm, and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving. Basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, scheduling tools). Experience & Education One year of experience coordinating volunteers, programs, or people-facing work highly preferred. Demonstrated experience engaging with diverse, vulnerable populations with empathy, cultural humility and respect required. Experience in nonprofit, community-based, or service settings a plus. Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or training welcomed.
