Job Description

The Hillsborough Community Services and Sustainability department provides a safe, clean, and healthy environment for the town. Committed staff maintain a high quality of life for Hillsborough residents through park, garden, greenway, and cemetery maintenance. We welcome applications from students with an interest in landscaping and the environment, and in public service. Join our team o learn how local government provides the upkeep and infrastructure that sustains Hillsborough! The Public Spaces Intern will work with the Community Services and Sustainability Senior Administrative Support Specialist to maintain Hillsborough's town property such as gardens, parks, streets, sidewalks, and rights-of-way. Daily activity will include assisting with Weeding, pruning, and planting Litter pickup Park and playground inspections, tracking work orders and supplies, and reservations Loading and unloading equipment and supplies Administrative duties, including inventory and public communication Cooperates and assists other divisions or departments related to Public Space, such as Stormwater and Public Works. Minimum Training and Experience Education, licensure, and certifications Enrollment through high school or junior college intern program and state issued driver's license are preferred. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Hillsborough complies with the youth employment provisions of the Wage and Hour Act, including federal and state standards, which includes completing a youth employment certificate and not exposing anyone under age 18 to any of the seventeen FLSA hazardous occupations. This position requires being physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly for the purpose of lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects; also must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 10 to 50 pounds. Work may include exposure to heat, cold, wetness, humidity, dust, dirt, etc., vibrations, noise, odors, and smoke. Time commitment Working hours are 10 hours per week, typically Mon. to Fri. 1:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Performance Indicators Skills:
Oral and written communication skills. Use a variety of computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets, or other system software, such as Microsoft Office365, Google Drive, etc.
Abilities:
Apply common sense understanding to routine situations. Perform quality work, with attention to detail. Work with the public in a professional manner, representing the town government in a positive light at all times. Perform duties and complete responsibilities with attention to deadlines. Comply with policies, procedure, rules, and regulations. Work in various weather conditions including smoke, dust, heat, cold wetness, etc.
