Job Description

Peer Support Specialist Purpose of Position:
The Peer Support Specialist provides peer-based support and assistance to participants residing at CPR, a low-barrier shelter serving individuals experiencing homelessness. Using personal lived experience, peer-support training, and knowledge of substance-use recovery and community resources, the Peer Support Specialist assists participants in identifying and overcoming barriers to housing, stability, recovery, and self-sufficiency. The position provides encouragement, advocacy, resource navigation, and practical support while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and respecting each participant's individual goals and choices. Essential Job Duties Include (But Not Limited To):
  • Team Building - Ability to work, function and communicate on a multi-disciplinary team. Possess the knowledge and skills to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time.
  • Community Relations - Ability to communicate to people internal and external to the organization and to represent the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
  • Time Management - Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work to complete within required time frames and to follow-up on pending issues. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in dynamic fast-paced environments and under pressure.
  • Communication - Effective written and verbal communication skills to perform group presentations, tactfully discuss issues, and listen to and understand complex information/situations. Ability to work with all levels within the organization, facilitate communication, and effectively document related activities.
  • Social Perceptiveness - Ability to work with a diverse population. Possess personal sensitivity to the needs and experiences of others and a non-judgmental attitude towards persons of differing standards, values, lifestyles, and ages.
  • A comprehensive understanding of substance abuse and its impact on the community and families and the ability to articulate that information to a diverse population.
  • Proficiency in Google products, and ability to navigate new computer systems as needed.
  • Maintain Peer Support certification (20 CEUS over a three-year period)
  • Maintain security of all PHI (Private Health Information).
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid Certificate.
Job Qualification Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) or Peer Support Specialist (PSS) by the State of Oregon.
  • One (1) of the following required in order to meet the definition of Peer as defined by the
State of Oregon Administrative Rule:
  • Self-identified person currently or formerly receiving mental health services.
  • Self-identified person in recovery from a substance abuse disorder, who meet the abstinence requirements for recovering staff in alcohol and other drug treatment programs.
  • Family member of an individual who is a current or former recipient of addictions or
  • mental health services.
  • Training and/or experience in community resources, substance abuse disorders and treatment/recovery in Lincoln County required.
  • Documentation of current and continuous abstinence required in accordance with certification requirements of MHACBO in the case of a recovering candidate.
  • Experience and/or training with computer applications preferred.
Physical Demands of Position:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools, or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required more than 50% of the work period while operating computer keyboard, telephone and other standard office equipment. May involve travel to other worksites.
