Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Resident Services Specialist is a part-time position that works weeknights and weekends to provide direct support, advocacy, and crisis intervention services to residents of the YWCA Emergency Shelter program. This position ensures that survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their dependents receive trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive support in a safe and stable residential environment. The Resident Services Specialist assist with intake assessments, safety planning, resource navigation, crisis response, shelter operations, and daily support services. This role works closely with shelter leadership, case management staff, and community partners to promote resident safety, stability, and progress toward housing and self-sufficiency goals.
Role & Responsibilities:
Resident Support and Advocacy Provide direct support and advocacy to shelter residents experiencing domestic and sexual violence, housing instability, and related trauma. Conduct ongoing safety planning with residents to support physical and emotional safety. Assist residents in accessing community resources, including housing, healthcare, legal services, counseling, employment, and public benefits. Support residents in understanding shelter guidelines, expectations, and available services. Provide empathetic, trauma-informed response to resident needs and concerns. Crisis Intervention and Safety Respond to crises, emergencies, and high-stress situations within the shelter environment. Utilize de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed approaches to support residents in crisis. Maintain a safe and secure shelter environment through adherence to safety protocols and procedures. Support emergency preparedness and response procedures as needed. Immediately report safety concerns, incidents, or mandated reporting situations in accordance with agency policy. Shelter Operations and Daily Support Support the day-to-day functioning of the emergency shelter, including resident check-ins. Assist with intake and orientation of new residents, including explanation of shelter policies and services. Monitor living spaces to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with shelter guidelines. Assist with distribution of supplies, donations, and resident resources. Documentation and Data Entry Maintain accurate and timely documentation of resident interactions, services provided, and incident reports. Enter required data into agency systems in accordance with confidentiality and reporting standards. Ensure documentation reflects trauma-informed, objective, and professional language. Support program reporting and compliance requirements as assigned. Collaboration and Team Support Work collaboratively with Emergency Shelter Manager, Shelter Case Manager, and other program staff to support resident goals. Participate in staff meetings, case consultations, and training sessions. Communicate resident needs, concerns, and progress to appropriate team members. Support coordinated service delivery across YWCA programs. Community Referrals and Resource Navigation Provide residents with information and referrals to internal and external support services. Assist residents in accessing housing resources, employment support, healthcare services, and legal advocacy. Maintain knowledge of community resources available to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Support residents in navigating systems of care and community-based services. Professional Standards and Compliance Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with agency policies and applicable laws. Follow all trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive service standards. Comply with mandatory reporting requirements and agency safety protocols. Participate in ongoing training and professional development. Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities but may provide guidance or support to volunteers or interns assisting with shelter operations. Qualifications Education Associate's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Counseling, or a related field preferred. Relevant experience in shelter services, victim services, or crisis intervention may be substituted for education. Experience Minimum of one (1) year of experience in human services, domestic violence services, homeless services, crisis intervention, or related field preferred. Experience working with survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, or human trafficking strongly preferred. Experience in a residential, shelter, or 24/7 service environment preferred. Experience providing crisis intervention, advocacy, or case support strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong commitment to trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive practices. Ability to respond calmly and effectively in crisis and high-stress situations. Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence dynamics and safety planning principles. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality. Ability to work effectively in a team-based, residential environment. Basic computer skills and ability to complete documentation accurately and timely. Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as part of a 24/7 program. Additional Requirements Successful completion of criminal background and reference checks. Completion of required domestic and sexual violence training upon hire. Ability to work in a residential shelter environment serving vulnerable populations.
