A Social or Human Services Specialist identifies and arranges community services for clients. Can involve coordination of services for people with disabilities or those in recovery. They may also coordinate housing or job training assistance for immigrants, veterans, former inmates or families in crisis and can be involved in advocating for client needs.
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, organizing, training, and supporting volunteers who serve at St. Katharine Drexel Shelter. This position builds relationships with community organizations, businesses, schools, churches, and civic groups to increase volunteer involvement while ensuring volunteers have meaningful and rewarding experience. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for volunteers and works collaboratively with agency staff to meet program needs. This position requires excellent communication, organization, Time management and community engagement skills.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Volunteer Recruitment & Community Outreach Recruit new volunteers through community outreach, presentations, volunteer fairs, and networking events. Represent the agency at community events, volunteer fairs, business expos, school career days, and service-learning opportunities. Develop and maintain relationships with businesses, schools, colleges, churches, civic organizations, and partner agencies to expand volunteer opportunities. Promote volunteer opportunities through social media, newsletters, community calendars, and other outreach efforts. Create innovative strategies to increase volunteer engagement and retention. Volunteer Coordination Screen, interview, and onboard prospective volunteers. Coordinate volunteer orientation and training. Match volunteers with appropriate opportunities based on agency needs, interests, and skills. Develop and maintain volunteer schedules for shelter operations, special events, donation centers, and outreach activities. Ensure adequate volunteer coverage for agency programs and special events. Be present during volunteer shifts as needed to provide guidance, support, and supervision. Maintain positive relationships with volunteers by recognizing contributions and providing ongoing support. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain accurate volunteer files, applications, background checks, confidentiality agreements, and required documentation. Track volunteer hours and prepare monthly and annual volunteer reports. Maintain volunteer databases and scheduling systems. Ensure volunteers comply with agency policies, safety procedures, and confidentiality requirements. Assist with volunteer recognition events and appreciation activities. Prepare reports and statistics regarding volunteer participation and community engagement. Community Partnerships Build partnerships with local businesses, schools, civic organizations, faith communities, and nonprofit agencies. Coordinate group volunteer projects and corporate volunteer days. Serve as the agency liaison for volunteer-related inquiries. Collaborate with staff to identify volunteer needs across all programs. Promote community awareness of the agency's mission and services. Team Collaboration Participate in agency staff meetings and supervision. Work collaboratively with shelter staff, outreach staff, administrative staff, and leadership. Assist with agency fundraising events and community awareness events as needed. Support special projects assigned by leadership. Attending required training and professional development opportunities. Qualifications Experience coordinating volunteers, community engagement, customer service, or nonprofit work preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational and time-management abilities. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Comfortable speaking to community groups and representing the organization professionally. Proficient with Microsoft Office and basic database management. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred. Ability to motivate and inspire volunteers from diverse backgrounds. Flexibility to occasionally work evenings or weekends for community events and volunteer activities. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout shelter facilities and community events. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Ability to travel locally for community meetings and volunteer recruitment events.
