What they do

A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

JOB DESCRIPTION REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in Counseling or Social Work Licensed Eligible
PREFERRED
ALC, LPC, LCSW, LMSW DUTIES:
Provides counseling to child and adult survivors of all forms of abuse. Conducts initial intake assessments and treatment plans related to helping clients accomplish goals in treatment Facilitates therapeutic/supportive groups to deal with target issues of client populations Provides current and accurate documentation of all services provided and participates in staff and peer-to-peer meetings Communicates well orally and in writing on intakes, progress notes, treatment support plans and other client related services Maintains appropriate communication with referral sources and other agencies about clients in common and makes referrals of client to additional area resources as needed Researches, attends, and participates in staff and training activities related to continuing education Assists Executive Director by providing necessary information related to the writing of grant reports and proposals Maintains outcome measures for grants
