Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to join our dynamic behavioral health team. In this role, you will provide expert counseling and support to individuals struggling with substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and related behavioral challenges. Your expertise will help clients develop effective coping strategies, achieve recovery goals, and improve overall well-being. You will work closely with clients through individual and group therapy sessions, conduct comprehensive assessments, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver evidence-based care. Duties Conduct thorough client assessments using DSM-5 criteria and clinical documentation standards to determine substance use severity and co-occurring disorders. Develop personalized treatment plans incorporating evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and behavioral therapy techniques. Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions focused on addiction medicine, mental health counseling, and relapse prevention strategies. Implement crisis intervention protocols and crisis management techniques to support clients experiencing acute distress or emergencies. Maintain accurate medical records, electronic health records (EHR), and documentation adhering to HIPAA regulations and confidentiality standards. Collaborate with healthcare providers, case managers, family members, and community resources to coordinate comprehensive care plans. Engage in ongoing research, case management activities, and clinical documentation updates to ensure high-quality patient care aligned with current best practices. Qualifications Master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field; licensure or certification as required by state law for addiction counseling or clinical counseling roles. Proven experience working with individuals with substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, and diverse cultural backgrounds. Strong knowledge of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, ICD coding systems (ICD-9/10), CPT coding for billing purposes, and medical terminology. Proficiency in clinical documentation standards, EMR/EHR systems management, and medical records maintenance. Skilled in motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, client assessment in therapy settings, and evidence-based practices such as applied behavior analysis (ABA). Excellent communication skills for client engagement, family counseling (child & family counseling), and interdisciplinary collaboration. Ability to manage crisis situations effectively while maintaining patient confidentiality under HIPAA guidelines.
