A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

Duties Conduct thorough client assessments using DSM-5 criteria and clinical documentation standards to determine treatment needs and develop personalized care plans. Deliver individual and group counseling sessions employing evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and behavioral therapy. Facilitate crisis intervention and crisis management to ensure client safety during acute episodes or emergencies. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated mental health and substance use disorder treatment, including case management and home & community care services. Maintain accurate electronic health records (EHR/EHR) using EMR systems, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations and medical documentation standards. Engage clients in intake procedures, patient assessments, and ongoing progress evaluations while maintaining confidentiality and respecting diverse cultural backgrounds. Support clients with co-occurring disorders through specialized interventions such as PTSD care, addiction medicine, and applied behavior analysis. Requirements Bachelor's or master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field; licensure or certification preferred. Proven experience working with individuals with substance use disorders in clinical settings such as Medication-Assisted Treatment Programs. Greet patients and assist front desk when needed. Proficiency in clinical documentation standards, State and Federal regulations, and electronic health record management systems such as Methasoft, preferred. Excellent client communication skills with the ability to conduct comprehensive client assessments in therapy sessions. Experience working with diverse populations from various cultural backgrounds; sensitivity to individual differences is essential. Ability to manage crises effectively while demonstrating strong crisis intervention skills and crisis management techniques. Knowledge of addiction counseling, behavioral health strategies, case management principles, and evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
