A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

Facilitate crisis intervention and crisis management strategies to ensure client safety and stabilization during acute episodes. Develop personalized treatment plans, case management strategies, and discharge planning aligned with client needs and clinical protocols. Maintain accurate medical documentation, electronic health records (EHR), and compliance with HIPAA regulations to ensure confidentiality and proper recordkeeping. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including social workers, medical staff, and family members—to coordinate comprehensive care plans. Engage in ongoing research, data collection, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance treatment outcomes and adhere to clinical standards. Qualifications Valid certification as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or equivalent credential. Proven experience working with individuals with substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or co-occurring disorders in clinical settings. Strong knowledge of addiction medicine, behavioral health practices, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and evidence-based treatment modalities. Proficiency in clinical documentation standards, medical terminology, EMR/EHR systems, and HIPAA compliance. Excellent client communication skills with the ability to conduct intake assessments, behavioral therapy sessions, and crisis interventions effectively. Experience working with diverse cultural backgrounds and understanding of social work principles is highly desirable.
