A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

Do you possess certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor with the Kentucky Board of Certification of Alcohol and Drug Counselors or have a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or a related field? If you answered YES then Western State Hospital (WSH) may be the place for you! WSH has a 172-year history in the Hopkinsville community. It is a state acute adult psychiatric facility that provides inpatient psychiatric evaluation and treatment for adults from 34 counties of Western Kentucky. WSH is on the National Register of Historic Places and is accredited by the Joint Commission. We are seeking an Alcohol & Drug Rehabilitation Counselor to join our team.
COVID-19
vaccination is recommended. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assess patients' history of substance use or misuse. Prepare and/or implement treatment plan interventions to address substance use or misuse. Counsel patients with a history of substance use or misuse. Conduct educational classes for patients with a history of substance use or misuse. Monitor and document patients progress toward treatment goals according to program policies and procedures. Maintain and protect patients confidentiality in accordance with Code of Federal Regulations. Perform other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate would have:
Skills in organization, communication, analytical thinking, and attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure. Motivated to learn. Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor from the Kentucky Board of Certification of Alcohol and Drug Counselors will substitute for the required college.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
(AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must obtain certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor from the Kentucky Board of Certification of Alcohol and Drug Counselors ( http://adc.ky.gov/ ) within four years of employment. (KRS Chapter 309: https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/chapter.aspx?id=38779 . Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials. Working Conditions Works within a treatment setting for alcohol and drug abusers. Probationary Period This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in
KRS 18A.111.
