What they do
A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Provide direct support and counseling to clients in an outpatient setting
- Conduct diagnostic evaluations and assessments to determine appropriate treatment plans
- Develop and implement individualized treatment goals and interventions
- Utilize evidence-based practices and therapeutic techniques in psychotherapy sessions
- Conduct crisis management and provide support during emergency situations
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care and ensure continuity of services
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of client progress and treatment outcomes
- Collect and analyze data to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and adjust treatment plans as needed
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Behavioral Health or related field
- Valid license or certification as a therapist or counselor (e.g., LPC, LMFT, LCSW)
- Experience working with children and adolescents preferred
- Strong knowledge of diagnostic evaluation and assessment tools
- Ability to address gender issues in counseling sessions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
