A Substance Abuse Counselor counsels people struggling with addictions to alcohol, drugs or other substances. Assists clients in dealing with personal and professional problems related to substance abuse. Collaborates with other health care and mental health care professionals to coordinate services for clients, and works with families of substance abusers. May work in a clinic, health care facility or community based program, or work with clients referred through the criminal justice system.

Duties Conduct thorough intake assessments and diagnostic evaluations to determine client needs and treatment goals Develop and implement individualized care plans incorporating addiction medicine, behavioral therapy, and mental health counseling strategies Facilitate individual and group therapy sessions using techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and applied behavior analysis Provide crisis intervention and crisis management to support clients experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate case management, home & community care, and hospital-based services Maintain accurate medical documentation, patient records, and notes in compliance with HIPAA regulations and ICD coding standards (ICD-9, ICD-10) Engage in ongoing research and data collection to monitor treatment effectiveness and improve clinical outcomes Experience Proven experience in addiction counseling, clinical counseling, or behavioral health settings Strong background in psychotherapy, social work, or mental health counseling with familiarity in crisis intervention and crisis management techniques Experience working with diverse populations including children & family counseling, PTSD care, and patients in hospital or community settings Knowledge of medical terminology, medical records management, CPT coding, ICD coding systems, and diagnostic evaluation procedures Skilled in patient assessment, intake processes, behavior management strategies, and case management practices Familiarity with applied behavior analysis (ABA), behavioral therapy techniques, and addiction medicine principles is highly desirable Prior experience working within HIPAA guidelines ensuring confidentiality and security of medical documentation Join us to be part of a passionate team committed to transforming lives through compassionate care.
