We are committed to helping survivors and their families achieve safety, stability, and long-term independence. Position Summary The Children's Counselor is part of the
Anew:
Building Beyond Violence and Abuse's Counseling Program. This role provides trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate counseling support services within a safe, confidential environment to children and families impacted by domestic violence. Responsibilities included assessing client needs, developing individualized treatment plans, establishing measurable goals, and collaborating with Anew staff and external agencies to support children's emotional well-being, safety, healthy coping skills, emotional intelligence, and healthy family relationships. This role includes individual children's counseling, family counseling, and parenting groups. Services are provided in person. The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, adaptable and committed to supporting survivors of trauma. This position requires a master's level clinician who can work both independently and as part of a team, communicate effectively, and collaborate to provide client-centered care.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments to determine eligibility for services and identify presenting needs.
  • Provide individual, developmentally appropriate counseling to children and adolescents, ages birth to 17, who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence.
Develop, implement, and regularly evaluate individualized treatment plans based on each child's needs, strengths, and treatment plan goals. Provide family counseling and parent/guardian support as clinically appropriate. Provided specialized, trauma-informed services to children ages birth through 5 and their families. Provide domestic violence education and support the development of healthy coping skills, emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, and healthy family relationships. Facilitate parent education classes utilizing the STEP curriculum and facilitate support groups as needed Collaborate with Adult Counselors, the Counseling Case Manager, and other Anew staff to coordinate services and provide comprehensive, client-centered support. Provide advocacy and coordinate with schools, mental health providers, court, DCFS, and other systems or community partners as appropriate.
  • Work with other Anew and Counseling staff to maintain open communication and develop a team approach.
  • Assist with audits, outreach events, fundraising activities, and special projects as needed. Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field that qualifies for state licensure.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), or equivalent state credential preferred.
  • Fluency in both spoken/written Spanish and English preferred.
Minimum 1 year of clinical counseling experience working with children required. Experience in domestic violence, sexual assault or advocacy preferred. Knowledgeable about child development, child and adolescent mental health and psychopathology. Knowledgeable about domestic violence dynamics and the impact of domestic violence and trauma on children and families.
  • Able to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner required.
  • Complete 40 Hour Domestic Violence Training preferred. Will be provided by Anew as needed.
  • Excellent computer skills, written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate the values of Anew.
  • Must be able to operate general office equipment.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods in an office setting, perform computer-based work and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Reliable transportation required; valid driver's license and proof of insurance preferred.
  • Some evenings and weekend hours required; flexibility in scheduling a must. Compensation & Benefits Anew offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
