McMillian Job Summary :

The Afterschool School Counselor is responsible for providing essential support and guidance to students in an afterschool program or extracurricular setting from 2:00PM-6:00PM. This role aims to enhance the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students, fostering an environment conducive to personal growth and development.

Key Responsibilities :

Mentoring and Guidance :

Offer mentorship and guidance to students, fostering their personal and social development. Encourage students to set and work towards their academic and personal goals.

Academic Support :

Assist students with homework, projects, and educational activities. Provide tutoring and academic enrichment programs to help students excel academically.

Behavioral Management :

Promote positive behavior and interactions among students. Implement discipline when necessary, adhering to established program rules and policies.

Crisis Intervention :

Be prepared to respond to crises or emergencies and provide immediate support to students in distress.

Individual Counseling :

Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions to address students' personal and academic challenges. Help students cope with stress, anxiety, and emotional issues.

Group Counseling :

Facilitate group counseling sessions on various topics, such as bullying prevention, conflict resolution, and study skills.

Communication :

Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators. Provide regular updates on student progress and address concerns promptly. Program Development & Curriculum Planning (STEM, Robotics, Art, Recreation) :

Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement programs that promote character development, life skills, and overall well-being.

Conflict Resolution :

Mediate conflicts between students, teaching them effective conflict resolution strategies.

Safety and Supervision :

Ensure the safety and security of students during afterschool activities. Supervise and enforce rules to maintain a safe environment.

Record Keeping :

Maintain detailed records of counseling sessions, incidents, and student progress while adhering to privacy regulations.

Professional Development :

Stay informed about the latest counseling techniques, child development, and educational trends through ongoing training and professional development.

Community Outreach :

Collaborate with community organizations, local agencies, and parents to provide additional resources and support for students.

Advocacy :

Advocate for the needs and interests of students, particularly those facing socio-economic challenges or other barriers to success.

Role Model :

Serve as a positive role model for students, exemplifying empathy, respect, and professionalism.

Qualifications :

HS Diploma, Bachelor's or Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Education, or a related field. Relevant counseling or educational certifications or licenses (if required by the state or organization). Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to help students succeed. Knowledge of counseling techniques and best practices in education. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information. Experience working with children and adolescents is preferred.
