Programs take place offsite in Rahway elementary schools. Counselors are responsible for leading their assigned student groups through a variety of planned activities that support program goals and keep students engaged. Positions are available in before care, aftercare, or both. All staff receive a complimentary YMCA membership.
Schedule Monday-Friday After Care:
2:30 pm - 6:30 pm (10-20 hours per week) Key Responsibilities • Must be available all five weekdays during program hours; schedule follows the Rahway school district calendar. Ensure the health, safety, and overall well-being of all participants through consistent and attentive supervision. Plan and deliver meaningful, age-appropriate activities, lesson plans, and special events in areas such as arts, character development, creative expression, community service, physical fitness, and nutrition. Maintain accurate documentation including attendance, sign-in/out records, and behavior, incident, or accident reports as needed. Actively participate in required training sessions, staff meetings, and YMCA special events. • For preschool-aged children who are not yet potty trained, diapering/changing may be required. Qualifications • Must be at least 18 years of age to apply. Experience working with school-age children preferred; experience with preschoolers is a plus. Must have access to a car and a valid driver's license for travel to program sites. Comfortable supervising groups of students in grades Pre-K through 5. Ability to work collaboratively with other staff to ensure a positive, high-quality program environment. Responsibilities Supervise children during afterschool hours, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times Lead engaging youth group activities, including games, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, and educational projects Implement behavior management strategies to promote respectful and positive interactions among participants Maintain a safe environment by adhering to first aid protocols, CPR procedures, and AED operation guidelines when necessary Collaborate with team members to plan age-appropriate curriculum that supports childhood development and social-emotional learning Communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding program participation and any concerns that arise Support outdoor work activities, including supervising field trips or outdoor play sessions in accordance with safety standards Requirements Experience working with children in educational or childcare settings, including camp experience or babysitting roles Knowledge of classroom management techniques and behavior management strategies Certification in first aid, CPR, AED operation, and familiarity with first aid protocols (certifications preferred but not required; training provided if needed) Background in special education or experience working with children with diverse needs is a plus Strong leadership skills with the ability to facilitate youth group activities confidently Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with children, parents, and team members Outdoor work experience is desirable for supervising outdoor activities safely Demonstrated understanding of childhood development principles and youth programs teaching experience Join us as a Program Counselor to help shape the future of our youth through inspiring activities, compassionate mentorship, and dedicated teamwork.
