Job Description
Full job description The Peer Counselor provides direct support and guidance to youth in shelter or transitional living environments. This position focuses on creating a safe, supportive, and empowering atmosphere where youth can develop positive coping skills and life strategies. The Peer Counselor serves as a role model, demonstrating healthy decision-making, accountability, and respect. This is a full-time, entry-level position; 32-40 hours per week. Must have open avalibility as some programs are staffed 24/7. Primary Responsibilities 1. Supervise and ensure the safety of all residents at all times. 2. Build rapport with youth through empathy, active listening, and genuine support. 3. Assist youth in daily routines, including meals, chores, hygiene, and life skills. 4. Cleaning duties. 5. Respond calmly and effectively to crises, providing de-escalation and emotional support. 6. Maintain accurate and timely documentation including youth logs and staff notes. 7. Promote respect, inclusion, and trauma-informed care practices within the shelter. 8. Communicate effectively with program staff, case managers, and community partners. 9. Participate in staff meetings and training to enhance skills and knowledge. 10. Assist with facility maintenance and program activities as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Minimum age of 18. Valid Oregon driver's license and acceptable driving record. Ability to pass DHS background and abuse registry checks. Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire. Ability to pass a drug screening. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Experience working or volunteering with at-risk or homeless youth preferred. Strong communication, empathy, and teamwork skills. Ability to model appropriate boundaries and positive behavior. Reliable, compassionate, and consistent presence for youth in care. Trainings & Certifications (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
