  • Special Education A compelling reason a special education teacher would want to join Breakthrough Academy Charter School (BACS) is the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative, student-centered team that truly shares responsibility for every learner's success .
At BACS, special educators are not siloed or treated as compliance-only staff. Instead, they are integral instructional leaders who co-design learning experiences alongside general educators, educational technicians, and leadership. This team-based approach reflects best practices supported by researchers like Linda Darling-Hammond, emphasizing that collective efficacy and collaboration significantly improve outcomes for students with diverse learning needs . What this looks like in practice: Shared ownership of IEP goals —not just managed by one teacher, but reinforced across classroom, project-based learning, and agricultural experiences Flexible, inclusive environments where students can demonstrate competency in multiple ways, aligning with principles from David Rose and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Strong paraprofessional (Ed Tech) support , with clear roles and consistent communication A culture where problem-solving is team-driven, not isolating —you have people to lean on, plan with, and grow alongside Just as important, the integrated model at BACS allows special educators to move beyond traditional pull-out instruction. Students can build skills through hands-on, real-world contexts —which research consistently shows improves engagement, independence, and generalization of skills.
Bottom line:
BACS is a place where special educators are supported, valued, and empowered to do their best work—within a team that genuinely has their back.
