Job Description

Category Schools - Special Education Teacher Job Type Contract Step into a rewarding contract opportunity making a difference for students in a specialized learning environment near Cohoes, NY. This respected private school offers services for students with significant autism, severe cognitive disabilities, and complex behavioral and communication needs. With both middle and high school positions available, you'll work in a self-contained 8:1:3 classroom, providing direct, individualized support to students in a supportive setting with just 78 students across 10 classrooms. Your hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., with time beyond the regular school day pre-approved (up to 40 hours/week) for tasks such as paperwork, IEPs, and planning. These contract roles run from July 2026 through June 2027, offering stability and the chance to make a sustained impact.
Key qualifications include:
New York State certification in Special Education (Students with Disabilities), or in progress/transferable licensure Consideration for recent grads or those transferring an out-of-state license Preferred experience with level 3 autism, extensive behavioral challenges, AAC/alternative communication, and/or students with medical needs Strong background in alternative assessments and curriculum modification is highly valued Your primary responsibilities will include: Providing direct instruction and support within a small, self-contained classroom Developing and implementing effective IEPs, data collection, and progress reports Collaborating with related service providers and paraprofessionals in a team-focused environment Supporting students' use of alternative and augmentative communication devices Modifying curriculum materials to meet the unique learning needs of each student Compensation for this role ranges from $35 to $50 an hour, dependent on experience and credentials.
