Speech Pathologist Definition:
Under the direction of the Principal and under the general direction of the Coordinator of Special Education, provide speech/language correction services to pupils with speech defects, language handicaps and hearing impairments.
Essential Duties:
  • Screens selected student populations or individually referred students for speech articulation and/or language communication problems.
  • Consults with staff regarding pupil speech/language problems.
  • Provides designated small group or individual instruction services for pupils whose needs are identified in a written Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Selects and adopts from a wide variety of remedial instructional methods and materials those which meet the present needs of pupils assigned to the Speech/Language Therapist Program.
  • Provides a learning environment which will promote high standards of pupil behavior and positive attitudes toward self and others.
  • Monitors and evaluates expected progress towards goals stated in the student's IEP and makes periodic reports of speech/language progress and personal adjustments to parents and staff.
  • Assesses academic and social growth of pupils assigned to the speech/language program; keeps other records and prepares reports as required by District or state regulations.
  • Participates, when required, in school-wide referral and assessment procedures in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Evaluates the effects of speech/language handicaps upon a pupil's educational achievement and personal adjustment, in cooperation with other staff.
  • Coordinates the speech therapist's program with total educational program of each assigned school.
  • Cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
  • Provides and maintains a functional and creative learning environment to the degree that space assignment permits.
  • Assists in carrying out a program of information and communication as a means of interpreting the school program to the community.
  • Maintains own professional competence through participation in District, regional or state sponsored in-service activities.
  • Selects and orders books, instructional aids and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.
  • Completes District forms and questionnaires and distributes bulletins to pupils as required.
  • Ensures a comfortable room environment through control of heating, lighting and ventilation to the extent possible.
  • Administers group or individual tests in accordance with District testing program as related to pupils' speech and communication needs.
  • Participates in curriculum programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level.
  • Shares in the sponsorship of student activities related to speech and communication and participates in faculty committee work.
  • Trains and directs the work of classroom assistants and volunteers if applicable.
  • Is excused from regular assignments to supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities due to itinerant nature of work schedule.
Non-essential Duties:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree or advanced degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements plus additional training in procedures for evaluation, scheduling and organizing therapy.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • Clinical Rehabilitative credential in Language, Speech and Hearing.
  • Other credential(s) authorizing speech/language therapy in public schools.
  • Standard Teaching with Speech and Hearing Therapy minor.
  • Special Teaching Credential in Speech/Language Defects.
  • Post-offer physical examination and drug screen
  • Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice
  • Current X-ray or tuberculin skin test before employment and every four years thereafter
