General Summary Note:
This opportunity is available only to current employees of WSSC Water. The Sr Trades Shop Technician performs highly skilled work in repairing, modification and fabrications of equipment at water and sewer plants, pumping stations, pipelines and depots. This role designs, develops and constructs structural steel, aluminum, stainless steel and cast-iron assemblies, equipment and special tools as requested and/or required with the use of manual equipment as well as CNC equipment. This role also creates work orders and documents work in a computer Maintenance Management System and assists other trades in the group with minimal supervision. Essential Functions Fabricates a variety of metal equipment and structures from blueprints and own drawings Works in various environments on a regular basis where wastewater may be present Welds interior and exterior of field pipelines Designs and produces components routinely with use of Bob CAD/CAM software Programs and operates CNC Lathes, Bed Mills, Plasma Cutter, Band Saw, and Metal Brake efficiently without supervision Makes necessary repairs to heavy equipment and trailers Fabricates and machines unavailable or outdated parts to repair existing pumps, valves, gears, shafts, bar screens, and various other critical components Provides measurements and schematics to be used by a Forgery to cast necessary components Thorough knowledge of properties of metals including when, where, and how to utilize aluminum, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, brass, and bronze Experience tapping and threading various metals Proven experience of competency in SMAW, TIG, and MIG welding Provides guidance to the Trades Shop Section staff on various equipment and operations. Installs antennas, devices, and safety equipment on top of elevated tanks Modifies, repairs, and replaces safety equipment throughout WSSC Water facilities Makes modifications and repairs to pumps, valves, pipelines, bar screens, and rakes all plant-related equipment where needed Drives and operates loaders, backhoes and other related equipment when making repairs and /or modifications to them Performs specialized welding on pumps, shafts, gears and housings of all types of metals Designs and fabricates tools and repair equipment that is unique to that job or piece of equipment Uses CMMS program to generate work orders and manage tasks Handles, stores, and uses bottled gases that are unique to the job Designs, modifies, and repairs equipment in pumping stations Schedules and organizes projects and installations with customers under guidance of Lead Technician and Section Manager Operates fabrication truck and maintains the materials, tools, and equipment on that truck Uses skill and knowledge of safe rigging practices in moving and installing equipment Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned Work Environment And Physical Demands Industrial, outdoor, and wastewater environments with exposure to weather, noise, fumes, wastewater, and active mechanical systems Heavy physical labor, including lifting, carrying, rigging, climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces or at heights Skilled fabrication and machining work involving welding, CNC operation, metal cutting, threading, and precision measurements Field repair and equipment operation, including pumps, valves, pipelines, loaders, backhoes, and fabrication trucks Safety‑critical tasks such as handling compressed gases, using rigging equipment, and installing or repairing safety systems on elevated structures Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of fabrication shop and field layout techniques and methods Extensive skill in the use of SMAW, TIG, MIG, and Oxy- Acetylene cutting and welding Ability to operate and perform maintenance on the lathes, bed mills, metal shear, metal punch, metal break, metal band saw, metal wet saw, metal bender, metal rollers, grinders, and the pipe bender and pipe notcher, and all other metal-working equipment according to safety procedures Experience with rigging and operating overhead cranes Ability to perform all work in safe and professional manner Ability to work from blueprints or sketches and ideas verbally conveyed by fellow employees pertaining to the requested work Ability to work with non-trade employees in problem solving when needed and the ability to work independently or with a team on any given assignment Knowledge and experience in the field of CNC programming and operation Minimum Education, Experience Requirements High School diploma or equivalent 7+ years experience as a Welder or CNC Machinist Completion of an accredited apprenticeship in Welding, Machining, or CNC Programming Additional Requirements Possession of a valid driver's license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date; Must obtain and maintain a current
