Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision performs a variety of duties related to the repair and maintenance of City streets and sidewalks and storm water. Operates automotive and specialized equipment in the performance of construction and maintenance activities. Reports to the Public Works Director.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in the construction and maintenance of city streets and sidewalks. Operates machinery and equipment such as dump trucks, bush hogs, chain saws, mechanical tools and hand tools to perform the skilled project tasks as required. Ensures the safe operation and utilization of all equipment and machinery. Assists in services and repairs machinery and equipment when necessary. Performs a variety of street maintenance and repair tasks such as cutting trees, cutting grass, finishing concrete. Exercises care in performing duties ensuring no damage made to telephone lines, power lines, and private property. Assists in removal and transport of debris and garbage to landfill for dumping. Drives sanitation truck and boom truck on a relief or fill-in basis. Assists in general maintenance of street signs. Knowledge of how to dig ditches and relocate pipe. Works in conjunction with utilities crews. Interacts with various individuals and groups such as co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. May have to come in after storms to help cut trees and other clean-up duties. May have to work City events outside of the normal work schedule and may be required to work overtime as needed. Performs other related duties as required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school graduate or equivalent, with two to three years of experience in street/sidewalk maintenance, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Maintains proper continuing education on mosquitoes and insecticides. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license and obtain a CDL certification within a year of employment.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the organization as they pertain to the specific duties of the job. Knowledge of the practices, methods, machinery, equipment and tools used within street maintenance activities. Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of the proper and safe use of machinery, equipment and tools necessary for assignment completion. Ability to efficiently operate Word and Excel to properly document needed lists.
Skills/Effort:
Ability to read and write, and to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform manual work requires some physical strength and agility. Ability to perform work required on work orders. Ability to work well with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Skill in performing general maintenance and repair operations incidental to regular duties and/or area of assignment. Skill in operating machinery is necessary for performance of duties.
Working Conditions:
Work is conducted outdoors with exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, dust and wetness. Moderately heavy to very heavy physical exertion is frequently required to lift and move objects weighing up to a hundred pounds using personal protective equipment.
