Job Description
Job description : Determines the position of structural components, working from blueprints or templates. Will locate specific components (usually precut & labeled structural members) and may use a scribe to mark reference line, such as center, buttock, and frames. The ship fitter is required to align these part specifications so that a tacker can tack these parts into place. The fitter may use various tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wedges, torches, clips, shims, various measurement tools such as a level, square, measuring tape, or compass.
Essential job duties include:
- Lays out and fabricates metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, and frames, and braces them into position within a hull of a vessel for riveting or welding.
- Lays out position of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates and using a scribe and hand tools.
- Locates and marks reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
- Positions parts in hull of vessel, assisted by Tacker-Helper.
- Aligns parts in relation to each other, using jacks, come-a-longs, turnbuckles, clips, wedges and mauls.
- Marks location of holes to be drilled and installs temporary fasteners to hold part in place for welding or riveting.
- Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories and members, such as doors, hatches, brackets, and clips.
- May tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.
- May bend, flange, cut, and shape plates, beams, and other heavy metal parts, utilizing the above-mentioned equipment.
- Structural Specialist performs the same duties as a Structural Fitter 1st Class, but with additional duties and responsibilities and can do them with more efficiency and accuracy. Structural Specialist has more experience and understanding on blue prints and laying out.
- He/she can do higher production with minimal supervision or errors.
- Capable of doing multiple jobs and not limited to one type.
- Structural Specialist may have welding, overhead crane, or forklift certifications.
- The above description is general in nature. A ship fitter may be required to perform additional duties not specifically described herein. HSEQ Roles and Responsibilities include the following:
- Take an active role in compliance with Alabama Shipyard's HSEQ Management System.
- Actively participates in the HSEQ Meetings, Job Safety & Environmental Analysis (JSEAs), Work Observations, and Hazard Recognitions processes.
- May assist supervisor in carrying out equipment HSEQ inspections.
- Must report all incidents, including Near Miss incidents, to the Supervisor immediately.
- Maintain all safety training.
- Must abide by any/all local, state, and federal regulations and to company policy.
- Support and participate in the organization's Continual Improvement Program to conform to
ISO 9001
2015 requirements by complying with the HSEQ Policy and procedures and meeting HSEQ objectives.- Understand the implications of not conforming to the HSEQ Management System requirements and not fulfilling the organization's compliance obligations.
- Understand appropriate actions to remove themselves from work situations that they consider present an imminent and serious danger to their life or health, as well as the arrangements for protecting them from undue consequences for doing so.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- No specific certificates or licenses are required.
- Structural Specialist has experience of a Shipfitter and a Structural Welder
- An individual can move up in class by their amount of experience or quality of work produced. Structural Specialist has additional duties and responsibilities and can do them with more efficiency and accuracy.
- Structural Specialist has more experience and understanding on blue prints and laying out than Structural Fitter 1st Class.
