Campus, ILLINOIS Summary Intended to be filled by a BGSU graduate student, the Student Advising Assistant works with the staff in the Office of Academic Advising & Planning (AAP) to support academic advising services for new, prospective, transfer, deciding, and pre-professional undergraduate student. Participates as professional staff in office programs and functions including student orientation, advising presentations, individual advising appointments, and serves on internal committees and work groups when applicable. The Student Advising Assistant will be a valued and contributing member of our advising team. You will develop the informational, conceptual, relational, and technological skills needed to become a confident and competent academic advisor. There will be times when the Student Advising Assistant will work independently and have ample time to collaborate with advising community members.Career Readiness Competencies:
Communication Professionalism Teamwork Essential Functions Familiarity with and development of academic advising core competencies (informational, conceptual, relational, technological, and personal) Assist Academic Advisors and Planners with preparation for academic advising appointments, Orientation events, and related functions Shadow and participate in academic advising sessions with BGSU students across a variety of academic majors/disciplines Complete an advisor training program Evaluate student progress and/or pre-college information to appropriately support student/connect to resources Support students from all backgrounds Utilize several types of software and technology systems to perform daily work tasks and to help with strategic office initiatives Learn and utilize learning-centered advising philosophies and models Practice personal and academic wellness through calendar management and supervisor support Understand and implement federal, state, and university laws and policies (i.e., FERPA) Collaborate with a student's support system to help provide a holistic experience (i.e., Family, Student Housing, Instructors, Financial Aid, Accessibility Services, Athletics, etc.) Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Registered and enrolled in a graduate degree program Good academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0 Experience working with college students Sound leadership skills Excellent organizational skills Exceptional interpersonal skills Good written and verbal communication Basic computer literacy Additional Information Up to 28 hours per week Occasional Night and weekend responsibilities may exist Bowling Green State University is an equal opportunity employer.
