Summer Garden Assistant

Since 1907, MacDowell has supported more than 8,500 artists at all stages of career development. Roughly 300 annual Fellowships lasting up to six weeks are awarded with no strings attached—artists arriving with their own projects are provided one of 31 studios on the 450-acre campus. The cultivated spaces under the Garden crew's care inspire the artists through aesthetic enjoyment and close connection with the natural environment. Meals prepared from food harvested in the kitchen garden strengthen artists' sense of place and connection to the land. Garden Assistants report to the Lead Gardener and work seasonally from May through August, with flexible schedules ranging from 20-40 hours/week. Responsibilities Assisting with spring clean up Planting, weeding, and watering edible and decorative gardens Working with kitchen staff to care for laying hens Qualifications Desire and ability to work harmoniously with a team of professionals dedicated to sustaining ideal working conditions for creative artists Ability to routinely transport plant and garden materials weighing 40 lbs. and occasionally 60 lbs. Ability to repeatedly reposition self and shift stance to perform essential gardening tasks such as weeding, planting, pruning, etc. Valid driver's license required Compensation Compensation for this seasonal position is $22/hour. Seasonal employees accrue paid sick time and are eligible for paid holidays based on their weekly schedules. Staff lunch is provided on full-shift workdays.
