Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the RN provides quality patient care using the Nursing Process, the Medical Plan of Care, and Organizational Policies. The RN supports the Mission, Objectives, and Goals of Mentor Surgery Center and participates in Quality Improvement activities. The RN is a part of the Intraoperative team, is responsible for coordinating activities in the Operating Room and management of Nursing Care for the intraoperative patient along with preoping and postoping.

Position Qualifications:

Current Registered Nurse licensure in State of Ohio Current BLS Certification ACLS and PALS Certification within 6 mos of date of hire. Minimum 2 yr. previous work experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Setting or Operating Room. Mental and Physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.

Position Responsibilities:

Plans, Implements, and Evaluates patient care to meet the individualized physical and psychological needs of the patient. Communicates courteously and effectively with Patient's, Physician's, and other Team Members. Checks assignment and is prepared for Surgeon's preference for supplies and sequence of procedure. Confirms Special Instrumentation and Implants for assigned Surgical Procedures. Opens sterile supplies with scrub nurse according to aseptic technique. Participates in Time Out, Verifying Patient ID, and Planned Procedure, Availability of Implants and Special Instrumentation and Supplies. Infuse Antibiotics within l hour of incision, 2hrs for Cipro or Vancomycin. Performs skin preparation as needed using aseptic technique, applies appropriate grounding pad for electrosurgical equipment per policy. Performs sponge and needle counts with scrub nurse according to policy. Applies principles of proper body mechanics during transfer and positioning of patient using Remains next to patient and assists Anesthesia personnel during induction, extubation, and emergence from Anesthesia. Collect and correctly label specimens and cultures. Complete accurate Intraoperative Record. Confirms patient consent for Anesthesia and Surgical Procedure. Clean patient, apply dressings, and connect drains at completion of procedure. Accompany patient and Anesthesiologist to PACU, provide report to PACU nurse including patient name, procedure performed, allergies, drains, physical/ emotional limitations. Turnover OR and set up for subsequent surgeries. Recognize signs of Malignant Hyperthermia and initiate MH protocols immediately. Provide advanced resuscitation techniques learned in ACLS when necessary.
