Immediately Job Description RISE Academy is an alternative middle/high school within Lawrence Public Schools. RISE is a trauma-informed school, grounded in restorative justice, that values relationships and mutual respect with the belief that all students want to be successful in school. RISE students learn in a competency-based structure in an academic and social-emotional program that works to prepare students for an ever-changing world after high school. We are seeking a Health and Physical Education teacher to do the following:
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans according to the Massachusetts state standards.
  • Teach students about healthy habits and behaviors.
  • Discuss the importance of physical activity, nutrition, and hygiene.
  • Explain how to prevent illnesses and injuries.
  • Provide accurate information about human anatomy and physiology.
  • Help students understand how to make informed decisions about their health and well-being
  • Embed opportunities for student critical-thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, as well as use of technology and digital media, into all lesson and unit plans.
  • Assess students regularly via formative and summative assessments, analyze data, and determine appropriate next steps for instruction
  • Understand and apply effective strategies for intervention and differentiation in the classroom, including serving English language learners and students with individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Maintain strong classroom management and hold students accountable for upholding school rules, student-developed norms, and classroom expectations.
  • Create a safe, purposeful classroom environment that prioritizes learning for all students; Ensure students' diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are respected and utilized.
  • Build relationships and communicate regularly with students and their families to ask for input
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of 12 to 15 multi-age students who you meet with daily and to whom you provide support.
Develop a sense of community within the advisory group and implement any advisory curriculum. Mentor and support these students' development of academic, social, health, and parenting skills to ensure they stay on track to graduation. Provide education and coaching for students around goal setting and development of non-cognitive skills such as perseverance, courage, and more.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, instructional leaders, and partners to ensure instruction is meeting the needs of all students
  • Implement common assessments that measure progress towards academic standards
  • Participate in and learn from regular professional development opportunities before and during the school year
  • Will improve practice by taking and implementing frequent feedback
  • Humility and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to take initiative and succeed in a fast-paced school environment while remaining calm and focused when faced with unexpected challenges Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred; appropriate Massachusetts DESE licensure required-this includes a passing score on the Communication and Literacy - Skills test and a passing score on the relevant subject matter knowledge test(s). Teachers should hold an SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) endorsement.
  • A minimum of two years' teaching experience in a school setting serving a similar demographic preferred, but not required.
