Job Description

Primary Purpose:
To provide support to the instructional process by serving as a special education teacher with specific responsibility for facilitating student success in general education academic areas; supervising special education students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Appropriate licensure through KSDE, High Incidence Special Education and appropriate content endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to instruct students and manage their behavior; collaboration, ability to present Information one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students.
Experience:
None required but preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Administer a variety of assessment-related activities (e.g. developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc.) for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and developing individual learning plans
  • Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborate with parents, instructional staff, other school personnel
  • Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and subject-specific assignments
  • Differentiate classroom work (e.g. instructional methods, materials, etc.) for the purpose of providing students with instruction that address individualized learning plans and/or behavior plans
  • Communicate expectations, student's achievements and student's progress to develop methods for improvement, and reinforce classroom goals in the home environment
  • Instruct students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study
  • Maintain a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual records (e.g. assessments, IEPs, etc.)
  • Participate in a variety of meetings (e.g. IEPs, general education intervention meetings, etc.)
  • Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs, progress reports, exit plans, data sheets, lesson plans, evaluations, etc.)
  • Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to the law and school policies as a mandated reporter
  • Serve as a student case manager for the purpose of ensuring each student is receiving services and all IEPs are in compliance
  • Support classroom teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and individual student plans
  • Provide academic support to students (e.g. reading, writing, verbal skills, etc.) and support the 1 of 2 Maize USD 266 Job Description implementation of IEP goals, assisting in adapting student needs into mainstream classrooms, and ensuring student success
  • Model desired behaviors (e.g. conversation, manners, cleaning activities, listening, everyday interactions, etc.) for students in multiple settings
  • Ensure safety through the use restraint and seclusion when necessary
  • Maintain confidentiality as appropriate in order to comply with district, state and federal laws.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

Lifting:
Occasional lifting of heavy (50 pounds)
Environment:
Primarily indoors; some outdoor student supervision
Mental Demands:
Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, solve problems, make decisions and be flexible
Attendance:
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations.
