TECHNICAL OPERATIONS MANAGER
Works under the direction of the Chief of Arts, Events and Entertainment. The Operations Manager has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of The STAR Centre and Cultural Center at the Opera House, including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance. Because the Technical Operations Manager may be called upon to deal with a wide range of highly specialized technical issues, he or she benefits from a working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions as well as presentations and events including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; outdoor festivals and events; appropriate safety precautions and procedures. The Technical Operations Manager will also maintain inventory of necessary supplies; assist in budget preparation; establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of various groups, vendors, renters, co-workers, and others; may have irregular and/or extended work hours; and be able to lift, push, or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools.
Essential Functions/Job Tasks:
(Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions) Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the facilities, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, audio/visual, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities. Determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, for events, presentations, and performances both indoor and outdoor in advance of production dates. Design, set up, maintain, and ensure proper operations of lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music, and other productions and projects including gymnasium events and outdoor festivals where needed; assist guest designers and artists with technical matters. Advise production managers, lighting, and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs. Evaluate technical and hospitality riders to assess booking feasibility, and spearhead event advancement for all city-booked talent. Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management where necessary. Recruit, train, and assign volunteers, paid technical staff, and stagehands for individual shows and events. Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations; facilitate the use of the technical aspects by the resident company and others engaged by or renting the facility. Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment. Maintain the appearance of the lobby and all public areas; communicate with maintenance and housekeeping crews as necessary to ensure a clean and safe environment Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies. Make recommendations to the theater leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment. Coordinate City-sponsored fireworks displays throughout the year.
