Job Description

Introduction The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is\r\nan independent State agency that regulates Maryland's $46 billion insurance\r\nindustry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers' and\r\ninsurance professionals' compliance with State law.� Through the diligence\r\nof a highly professional staff of market analysts, financial analysts,\r\naccountants, lawyers, law enforcement officers, actuaries, complaint\r\ninvestigators, and others, the MIA works to facilitate a strong and competitive\r\ninsurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated\r\nfairly.� Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource\r\nfor lawmakers, consumers, and other public and private entities.�\r\n�\r\nThe MIA is charged with a broad range of\r\nresponsibilities including the licensure of insurance carriers and insurance\r\nproducers (brokers/agents) operating in Maryland, the conduct of financial\r\nexaminations of companies to monitor financial solvency, and the review and\r\napproval of rates and contract forms. The MIA investigates reports of consumer\r\nfraud and consumer complaints about life, health, automobile, homeowners,\r\nand/or property insurance.� Insurance carriers are subject to market\r\nconduct examinations and other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland\r\nlaw.� The MIA also has a unit dedicated to consumer education and\r\noutreach, which participates in hundreds of events and reaches thousands of\r\nindividual consumers annually.\r\n�\r\n• This is a Management\r\nService position that serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.\r\n

POSITION DUTIES
The\r\nMIA's Property and Casualty Division is seeking a Senior Actuary, Property and\r\nCasualty to perform actuarial analysis of property and casualty insurance\r\nrate/rule filings for adherence to actuarial principles and compliance with the\r\nAnnotated Code of Maryland Insurance Article and COMAR. This position conducts\r\nsurveys, special studies, data calls and prepares reports as required. This\r\nposition also provides actuarial perspective and recommendations to the\r\nProperty and Casualty (P&C) Division staff and other sections of the MIA with\r\nrespect to the Insurance Article, COMAR, MIA policy and legislation;\r\nand may provide testimony in support of the analysis or opinions at rate\r\nhearings as needed. The Senior Actuary will utilize various types of software to\r\nperform job functions.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Senior Actuary, Property and Casualty position does not\r\ninvolve supervisory responsibilities, but may assist in the training of\r\nactuarial interns. The Senior Actuary, Property & Casualty will report to the\r\nChief Actuary, Property and Casualty. \r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;\r\n A minimum of five (5) years of property/casualty actuarial experience; and\r\n Associate through Fellowship standing in the Casualty Actuarial Society, and membership in the American Academy of Actuaries.�\r\n\r\n
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n\r\n Understanding of property and casualty insurance ratemaking procedures and rate regulatory statues.\r\n Strong analytical, mathematical, problem solving, and written and verbal communication skills.\r\n Computer skills and experience with database applications.�\r\n\r\n\r\n
